Cayman Islands Fidelity Bank calls in outside auditors

In a brief press relief issued last Monday (8) Cayman Islands Fidelity Bank has “engaged Deloitte Cayman to conduct an independent review of the Bank’s internal processes and policies to confirm that they are in line with regulatory requirements.”

The bank said they had consulted with the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA) regarding the internal review and the regulator will contribute to the preparation of the Terms of Reference for the work “to ensure that the review covers any questions that CIMA may have”.

“They [Deloitte Cayman] have the appropriate breadth of experience to assess Fidelity Bank’s processes to ensure they are sufficiently robust. The Deloitte team will be supported by the Bank’s compliance and internal audit team, and outside resources as needed,” Fidelity Group CEO Anwer Sunderji said. “These are matters of significant complexity, and the expertise of this Big Four firm is second to none.”

The bank’s Board and Executive Committee are committed “to upholding their policies and procedures to the highest possible standard”.

The press release was issued because Fidelity was one of the institutions named in the 167-page indictment from the US justice department that outlines the massive corruption investigation into racketeering, fraud and money laundering by FIFA officials that include Caymanian Jeffery Webb. Webb worked many years for Fidelity Bank and a second person named, past Cayman resident Costas Takaas held accounts there.

Baby among five survivors found drifting after plane crash in the Bahamas

iNews b baby-survivorFrom CARIBBEAN360

NASSAU, Bahamas, Tuesday June 9, 2015 – An eight-month-old baby boy was among the five people who survived when their plane crashed in the Bahamas yesterday evening.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) said the Cessna 172 aircraft was believed to be flying from Crooked Island to New Providence when it went down in waters south of New Providence.

After an almost three-hour search by the RBDF and the United States Coast Guard, the survivors – 26-year-old pilot Anthiqueko Gibson; Lorenzo Moss, 47; Autoria Moss, 27; Andre Gibson, 22; and 18-month-old Andrew Gibson – were found drifting on a life raft about near New Providence, nine miles southeast of Nassau.

They were transported by ambulance to the Coral Harbour Base to receive medical attention.

“All passengers appeared to be in good health,” the RBDF said.

While the RBDF did not say what was the cause of the crash, the Tribune quoted Transport and Aviation Minister Glenys Hanna Martin as saying that the pilot had reported engine problems before the single-engine plane went down.

Cayman Islands Sports Minister, Osbourne Bodden, said on local television CITN/Cayman27 on Monday (8) other Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) members might be named in the probe that is ongoing probe into FIFA corruption.

“It is a close knit group [CIFA] and they’ve been in charge of football for some time, so who knows?”

Warner accused of asking Egypt for R88million bribe

By AFP From Sowetan

Former Fifa vice-president Jack Warner asked Egypt to pay a $7-million (about R88-million) bribe in exchange for seven votes to host the 2010 World Cup, a former Egyptian minister alleged yesterday.

Former minister of youth and sports, Aley Eddine Helal, said Warner, who is now at the heart of a corruption scandal engulfing football’s world governing body, asked for the money in 2004.

“Warner was the one who approached us from Fifa. He said he could guarantee us seven votes …

“He asked for one $1-million for each vote,” Helal said.

Egypt was a candidate to host the 2010 World Cup, but it received no votes in the 2004 Fifa ballot.

South Africa was chosen to host the tournament.

“We didn’t pay any bribes,” said Youssef el-Dahshori, who was Egyptian Football Association president at the time.

“That was one of the reasons why we didn’t get any votes.”

Warner introduced himself in 2003 during a Fifa congress held in Qatar and proposed a meeting, Dahshori said.

“I met Warner in the UAE. He proposed to be Egypt’s consultant in Latin America and Europe, since he has good connections there.

“He wanted to take $7-million dollars for seven votes, and said he wouldn’t take the money for himself but for developing the sport in Latin America,” said Dahshori, stressing that he had refused Warner’s offer.

Warner was indicted by the US for allegedly taking a $10-million bribe to help South Africa win the race to host the 2010 World Cup, among other charges.

Fifa admitted in a statement last Tuesday that it had processed a $10-million payment from South Africa to Warner, who is one of 14 people facing charges of involvement in more than $150-million of bribes to soccer officials.

Attitude the reason behind collapse in Caribbean cricket, says Ambrose

From Big News Network (ANI)

Former West Indies bowler Curtly Ambrose opined that a shift in attitude is the reason that cricket in the Caribbean has undergone a massive downfall, despite the region having some of the most talented players in recent times.

According to Ambrose, it was ‘serious business’ in the old times and there was never a time when the players just went through the motions because it was the nets, news.com.au reported.

He also noted that many English county teams do not touch West Indians because they carry a reputation of being lazy and of coming with large egos.

Ambrose further said that all the West Indies greats, including Sir Vivian Richards, Michael Holding, Andy Roberts and Malcolm Marshall polished their skills in English cricket, while the current crop of cricketers from the region don’t get the opportunity to do so. (ANI)

June 8: National Caribbean HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

From amfar

June 8 marks the 10th annual National Caribbean HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The day, convened by the Caribbean People International Collective, Inc., aims to cultivate a health-conscious atmosphere within Caribbean communities throughout the U.S. and its territories by encouraging individuals to get tested and, if necessary, treated not only for HIV, but also for other diseases that disproportionately impact the population, including diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular diseases.

The Caribbean has the world’s second-highest rate of HIV after sub-Saharan Africa, and in 2013 250,000 people in the region were living with the virus. Approximately three million individuals of West Indian descent and nearly nine million tracing their heritage to Puerto Rico, Cuba, or the Dominican Republic currently live in the 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., and nearly four million more live in the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Many Caribbean Americans living in the U.S. are categorized as African Americans, who constitute just 13% of the national population but account for nearly half of all new HIV infections annually. In Puerto Rico, the rate of HIV infection is nearly twice as high as the rate in the U.S., and the rate of death from AIDS-related causes is nearly four times as high.

“In 2006, National Caribbean American HIV/AIDS Awareness Day was created as an opportunity for Caribbean American and Caribbean-born individuals to get educated, get tested, get treated, and get involved,” said Congresswoman Barbara Lee. “This is critical because as we attempt to combat HIV/AIDS in America, overcoming racial and ethnic disparities remains a serious issue at the heart of the fight. In particular, Caribbean Americans face low quality healthcare and a cultural stigma against public discussion of HIV/AIDS.”

Around the corner yet a world away, another Miami beckons

Honduran village of “Miami” features Garifuna culture, beautiful natural surroundings and Caribbean beaches

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, Jun 08, 2015 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Miami, Florida is beloved and well-known, with its white sandy beaches and year-round tropical weather being among the elements making it one of the world’s premier getaways.

Yet, just a two-hour flight from “the Magic City” lies another Miami — a small beachfront fishing village on Honduras’ Caribbean coast.

Located just 20 minutes from the town of Tela, the village of Miami may not resemble its Floridian namesake, but has its own appeal as well as about 100 residents; members of the Garifuna community that descends from African and Caribbean settlers from years gone by. Villagers proudly maintain their rich distinct cultural heritage, including traditions of delicious foods and exotic musical rhythms. With Miami located between the Caribbean Sea and Los Micos Lagoon, the village beckons to birdwatchers and fishermen. Others just visit to enjoy the beach, while sipping on a cold beer or savoring seafood at one of three beach shack restaurants.

The nearby luxury resort of Indura, with more than 250 rooms and villas, recently hosted the PGA’s prestigious Honduras Open, yet even many of the visitors to this prestigious international event missed the opportunity to come see the tiny village known as Miami.

Official information on visiting the Tela Bay region of Honduras’s beautiful Caribbean coast, home of “The Other Miami”, can be found at www.honduras.travel/en/atlantida/destinations/tela. Garifuna Tours (www.garifunatours.com) offers a variety of options for seeing Miami, Los Micos Lagoon and other unique area offerings. Garifuna to become honorary Vincentian citizens

garifuna-dancers-hondurasBy Nelson A. King from Caribbean Life

Opposition Leader Arnhim Eustace says, if his New Democratic Party (NDP) wins the next general elections in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, his administration would honor the Garifuna people by making them “Honorary Citizens of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.”

“I want to bring them closer to St. Vincent and the Grenadines,” said Eustace, leader of the country’s main opposition party, in making the announcement Sunday night at a town hall meeting at the Friends of Crown Heights Educational Center in Brooklyn, flanked by Member of Parliament for North Leeward, Roland “Patel” Matthews, and former Communications and Works Minister in a former NDP administration, Glenford Stewart.

“There are those who say it can’t be done, but it will be done,” added the former prime minister to loud applause, with some Garifuna in the audience. “I have naysayers who say ‘it’ll be a drain on the economy.’ There’s a saying, ‘where ignorance is bliss, it’s folly to be wise.’

“I must say, they’ll (Garifuna) make the most marvelous contribution to St. Vincent and the Grenadines,” continued the NDP president. “There’s no way they can pull us down; they’ll pull us up.

“Tonight, I say to the Garifuna, ‘welcome home’,” Eustace declared. “We’ve stated our position tonight, and we’ll stand by it.”

During his week-long visit to New York, Eustace said he had met with a number of Garifuna, descendants of Black Caribs from St. Vincent and the Grenadines and “got an understanding of what took place” (leading up to and during their exile by the British on Balliceaux – a rocky island in the St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Roatan, an island off Honduras).

“They are, therefore, ours,” the Opposition Leader said. “It is time that we take steps to remedy this situation. We cannot allow, in good conscience, the situation to continue.”

In recent years, Eustace said he had heard “more and more of the Garifuna and their commitment to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, which they call Yuremein.

“It became more and more clear that we cannot ignore this matter,” he said. “We must address it.”

He noted that, about 218 years ago, the British “mistreated and exiled a lot of people we now call Garifuna,” stating that they were first sent to Balliceaux “where many of them died” and then to exile in Roatan.

“Therefore, a lot of people were not aware of the extent and despicable nature that took place,” Eustace said. “Five hundred people who left Balliceaux 218 years later now number 700,000. But they’re from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, having gone to Honduras, gone to Belize and so forth, and 400,000 here (in the United States).

“I believe this is a remarkable story,” he added. “It’s a remarkable story because many of them are professionals in different parts of the world.”

Douglas Howard – an NDP activist and former president of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Progressive Organization of New York (SPOONY), the NDP New York affiliate that sponsored the town hall meeting – thanked Eustace for his gesture towards the Garifuna and recommended that Balliceaux be declared a “National Shrine.”

Eustace agreed, adding that he had already communicated that suggestion to the group of Garifuna with whom he met in New York.

“Your announcement is most welcome,” Belizean Joseph Guerrero, who spoke on behalf of the Garifuna people, told Eustace in the question-and-answer segment. “And, on behalf of the Garifuna people worldwide, thank you.”

Wellington Ramos, who was also part of the Garifuna delegation and who also hails from Belize, said he found Eustace to be “a very sincere person” in their “deliberations.”

“I want to say, if somebody can’t give you something in 14 years, why you have to wait another hour,” asked Ramos, an adjunct lecturer in politics at the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University and a newspaper columnist, stating that the Garifuna had been waiting indefinitely to become “Honorary Citizens” of their motherland, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
