PH POCS Nepal Donation2 280515 SEThe public service, including civil servants, staff of statutory authorities and government companies (SAGCs), as well as Members of the Legislative Assembly, have donated KYD$4690 to help Nepal recover from two recent major earthquakes.

Deputy Governor Franz Manderson presented the cheque to Cayman Islands Red Cross (CIRC) Director Jondo Obi at the Government Administration Building (GAB) on Tuesday, 26 May 2015.

Ms Obi explains that the earthquakes left some 8,600 dead, 22,000 injured and 3.5 million in need of food assistance. An estimated three-quarter of a million homes were damaged or destroyed.

GAB Security Guard Durga Limbu (R) and Ms Puspa Rumba (L) who attended the presentation, thanked the civil service on behalf of the Nepali community in the Cayman Islands.

Noting that the Red Cross had designated May as Nepal Earthquakes Appeal month, Ms Obi said: “The community has answered our call and is still going strong. To date we have collected nearly KYD$19,000. In addition to public servants, other significant donations have come from Icoa Restaurant, Cayman Prep and High School, and PKF. CIRC also donated fifty percent of raffle ticket sales from our annual fundraising gala to the Nepal appeal.”

She added that there would be still more opportunities to support the cause. On Saturday 30 May, Foster’s Food Fair will sell “Cayman Supports Nepal” t-shirts and stickers at all its locations, including Priced Right and Bay Market. The supermarket will also encourage people to make donations at the register,

Then on 6 June, chefs from the Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman, the Westin Grand Cayman, the Cayman Culinary Society and other local restaurants will host “Cayman 4 Nepal” where attendees will be able to enjoy food stations, wine or beer with the purchase of their tickets.
