Cayman Islands law firm announces recipients of The Walkers’ 2015 Legal Scholarship

extGrand Cayman – (27 May, 2015) – Walkers is pleased to announce two recipients of The Walkers’ 2015 Legal Scholarship

Jada Andrade of St. Ignatius Catholic School and David Lee of Cayman International School have been awarded Walkers’ scholarships which will pay their university fees, provide them summer internships when on university holidays, and give them the opportunity to gain an articled clerkship with Walkers on completion of their studies.

Both Jada and David have a track record of excellence. They began their schooling at local Government schools and both went on to receive scholarships – Jada to St. Ignatius Catholic School and David to Cayman International School. After their upcoming exam results, Jada and David plan to attend university in the United Kingdom: Jada at the University of Bristol or the University of Manchester; David at the University of Liverpool.

Anthony Partridge, Chair of Walkers Trainee Committee, said of the two candidates: “I am very excited to welcome Jada and David to the Walkers scholarship programme as they were the stand out candidates in a very competitive group of Caymanian students. From their applications through to their interviews I could tell that we had two candidates that emphasised Walkers’ core values of respect, integrity, consistency, honesty and trust. Cayman’s legal future is in good hands with these two outstanding young adults.”

When asked about ‘why the law’, David Lee answered: “It’s the first thing that I knew that I wanted to be. My father has recently become a lawyer and his experience highlighted for me the versatility that the law can offer to you as well as the opportunities to work with a variety of different people.”

Asking Jada Andrade about the scholarship programme she said: “The scholarship programme excites me. It provides innumerable possibilities for the future and I cannot wait to grow as a person at university and to grow professionally through Walkers. It is a great opportunity.”

Walkers was the first Cayman Islands law firm to offer a structured training programme to law students and, excluding Jada and David, is currently sponsoring nine Caymanian students through university. The Walkers Articled Clerk Training Programme began in 1983 with two articled clerks and, since then, Walkers has trained 38 Articled Clerks who all went on to be admitted as Attorneys at Law to the Cayman Islands Bar.
