46% UK citizens living in SW England say Tresco is in Cayman

One in five people in the South West believe the Minack Theatre is in Athens, while almost half think Tresco is in the Cayman Islands, according to a shocking new survey.

South Westerner’s lack of knowledge about the supposed landmarks that are on their doorstep has been revealed in a survey by First Great Minack TheatreWestern.

The train operator said that most people who were shown images of the iconic destinations, as well as others in the country, were clueless as to their origin with most placing them in another country entirely.

When shown pictures of Appletree Bay on the Isles of Scilly, 23% placed it in the Maldives, while 46% thought Tresco was in the Cayman Islands and 21% Porthcurno’s Minack Theatre was in Greece.

A further 20% thought Harbour Beach in St Ives St Iveswas in St Tropez.

The lack of knowledge extended to other landmarks to with 42% placing the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth in Dubai and 49% putting Wastwater in the Lake District as Lake Geneva.

First Great Western has launched the statistics to promote its new app The Inside Track to allow users to discover information about sites accessible via the First Great Western track.

Philip Edgerton, head of marketing at First Great Western, said: “We live in a fantastic country, but this research shows that many of us simply aren’t aware of the amazing places on our doorstep just waiting to be discovered.

“We’re passionate about all the UK has to offer, so wanted to help Brits share in it too by giving them the Inside Track. Traveling by rail is a fantastic way to see the country – and it saves money too: by booking online in advance with First Great Western, travellers can save 10% on fares.”
