Turtle Farm loses almost 300 turtles due to system failure

Cayman Islands Turtle Farm has been in operation for over 40 years but last month they had the first incident of its kind.  The death of 229 young turtles.

A break in a main pipe that supplies sea water broke under the Northwest Point road by the farm and when the pipe was being repaired the back-up system failed. This affected the water supply to several tanks.

Officials said the turtles that died represent less than 5% of the population at the farm.

The farm has roughly 490 turtles for breeding and more than 7,000 as part of a release programme.
