Tim Cook hints Apple won’t release new products until fall

Don’t hold your breath for any big Apple product launches this summer.

Apple’s CEO Tim Cook suggested during the March quarter earnings call Tuesday that the company will not be releasing any new products until the fall. “Our teams are hard at work on some amazing new hardware, software and services we can’t wait to introduce this fall and throughout 2014,” Cook said.

When asked to clarify later in the call whether this meant no new products would come during the summer, Cook remained somewhat vague. “I dont want to be more specific, but I’m just saying we’ve got some really great sutff coming in the fall and across all of 2014.”

In recent months, there have been rumors that Apple might release the next iPhone this summer, or even launch its own streaming radio service sometime in the next few months. Cook’s statements appear to pour cold water on those rumors.

If true, this isn’t just disappointing to consumers aching for a new Apple product, but also for investors. It has been more than six months since Apple held its last big launch event for a new product — the iPad Mini in October. With no new products on the horizon, investors and analysts have filled the void by speculating about the company’s decline. Apple’s stock dropped from more than $600 when the iPad Mini was announced to less than $400 earlier this month.

Apple beat Wall Street’s estimates for revenue as well as for iPhone and iPad sales for the quarter, and announced plans to give back $100 billion to shareholders by the end of 2015, which should appease investors somewhat. However, without any new releases on the horizon, many will likely continue to speculate about whether Apple really does have another breakthrough product up its sleeve.

Apple’s stock initially shot up by as much as 5% in after-hours trading following the earnings report, but it has since slipped somewhat and was essentially flat as of publication.
