The Editor Speaks: An unfortunate decision by HE the Governor

Colin WilsonwebWith the somewhat adverse publicity and the “loose” charges made by certain members of the United Democratic Party concerning the United Kingdom (UK)’s role in the Cayman Islands political affairs, it is disturbing to read that Cayman Islands Governor Duncan Taylor filed a request on Monday (7) seeking judicial review of an order his office received to release a complaint by former “Operation Tempura” chief investigator, the somewhat infamous Martin Bridger.

The Cayman Islands Information Commissioner Jennifer Dilbert, ordered the release of the complaint back in November, 2012, and also said the Governor’s office should release a response that evaluated the claims put forth in that complaint.

Former Cayman Net News Reporter, John Evans, has also filed open office requests with Duncan Taylor’s office seeking to obtain a copy of Mr. Bridger’s complaint. He also filed a similar request along with the Caymanian Compass to have the 185 page review executed by United Kingdom-based Queen’s Counsel, Benjamin Aina, to be made public.

The UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office had declined to release them on the grounds that they could prejudice relations between Britain and the Cayman Islands.

The timing of such an action by Duncan Taylor is very unfortunate and now gives some unwarranted credence to the claims by the UDP rank and file that its leader, McKeeva Bush, was plotted against by the UK with “trumped up” charges in order to get his removal as premier of the Cayman Islands.

To make matters even more unfortunate, the governor’s challenge of the decision of the Cayman Islands Information Commissioner, is the very first so challenge.

To start out 2013 with the high hopes that the Cayman Islands relationship with the United Kingdom would be much improved have been immediately dashed.

Perhaps, the UK don’t really care. It certainly looks that way.
