Free Haitian Heritage Month Events in NYC

This May, the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) invites New Yorkers to celebrate the city’s vibrant Haitian-American community with a series of free, family-friendly arts and culture events during Haitian Heritage Month.

Healing the Lakou: Community Wellness Through Haitian Traditions (MAY 11)

Description: This Haitian Heritage Month, the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) invites you to experience Healing the Lakou: Community Wellness Through Haitian Traditions on Saturday, May 11, 2024, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Gaia NoMaya in Brooklyn, NY. Healing the Lakou centers around fostering restoration and wellness within the African Diaspora, specifically Haiti, our freedom home. With the current events in Haiti, the Diasporic community, as is Haitian tradition, calls for strengthening itself through communal healing.

Description: The Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) invites you to celebrate Haitian Flag Day with a special *BYENVENI* Curatorial Talk on Saturday, May 18, 2024, from 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm at the CCCADI Firehouse in East Harlem. Moderated by Haitian-American art curator Yvena Despagne, this discussion shines a spotlight on the creative expressions of four of the 11 exhibition artists embracing the theme of “lakay” (translated as “home” in Haitian-Kreyòl). In discussing their artistic expressions, this conversation will explore the importance of recognizing Haitian Flag Day, the cultural significance of the flag, and the concept of the “Haitian Dream.”

BYENVENI: A Multimedia Exhibition of Haitian Diasporic Art (ONGOING)

Gallery Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m., Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and every third Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m.
Description: BYENVENI*, CCCADI’s multimedia exhibition of Haitian Diasporic art, shines a spotlight on the creative expressions of eleven artists who focus on the theme of lakay (translated as home in Haitian-Kreyòl), and explore Haiti as both a cherished internal sanctuary, preserving cultural traditions and religious practices, as well as an external haven, a space of refuge, familial and communal development, a source of boundless joy, and the cornerstone of sovereignty. The exhibition will be on display February 15 – November 14, 2024.
