Summer reading challenge

Reading Challenge 4This week, GIS Spotlight captures reading excitement for children and their adult mentors. After that, we revisit nesting turtles and tender hatchlings during their limited time on land.

Teachers and parents have long promoted reading to improve vocabulary and comprehension. More importantly, they know that reading more, starting young, can enhance writing skills.

Join us to see how the CI Public Library Service is engaging young minds to improve their reading in a fun way, which can also result in them winning prizes. Hear about the Summer Reading Challenge that aims to improve verbal skills in the coming school year.

Reading Challenge 5On our next stop, see how reading can be fun for adults helping children improve their skills. Tune in to participate in the Buddy Reading programme at the Sir John A Cumber Primary School in West Bay which attracts volunteers from private sector partners and a service club, the Rotary Sunrise.

Lastly, we take to the beach once again with Department of Environment officers, promoting darkness or at least the sensible and proper use of lighting so that we humans don’t adversely impact nesting sea turtles or hatchlings in their maiden trek to the sea.

Produced by GIS Marketing and Communications, GIS Spotlight is a government programme about topics and issues that affect you. The weekly show airs Mondays on CIGTV on Cable Channel 20 at 7.00 pm and Saturdays on Cayman27 at 6.00 pm. It also broadcasts on Radio Cayman on Tuesdays at 7.00 pm.

All stories seen in the week’s GIS Spotlight can also be found on the GIS Marketing and Communications website: www.gis.ky and on the CIGovtInfoServices YouTube channel.
