New Year is a good time to go back to college says ICCI

Student council members at the International College encourage people to go back to college in the New Year (L-R): James Wilson, ICCI student president; Sharda Ebanks, ICCI student secretary and Brevon Elliot, student treasurer.

The International College of the Cayman Islands (ICCI) says with the New Year right around the corner, it is a good time to start out of the gate with an ambitious goal like going back to school to earn a college degree. Classes for the winter quarter at the International College of the Cayman Islands start on 7 January and it is the perfect time for people to begin 2013 on the right note.

With the tourism sector expected to continue its steady growth in the Cayman Islands and the larger Caribbean in the next few years, the decision to major in hotel management made sense for a dynamic career, says student Sharda Ebanks.

“I tell my friends and family members that I attend the International College for many reasons,” says Ms. Ebanks. “The convenience of night classes, the small number of students per class and great professors. All of these factors makes it so much easier for me to focus,”

Many students come to the campus in Newlands starting at 5.30 pm straight from work while others prefer a 7.30 pm class. One of the popular classes offered this term is the speech class, which really helps people overcome their fears of public speaking. Spanish is another course offering that provides opportunities for career growth, especially since more businesses in tourism and financial industry are catering to Latin American clients.

Because much of the student body is in their 30s, 40s and 50s, both mature students as well as recent high school graduates feel comfortable at the International College, because it is an academic atmosphere that caters to their needs.

Considering tuition is so affordable and also U.S. accredited, the International College offers enormous value for associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degrees compared to schools in the U.S. or Canada, says James Wilson, a student majoring in business administration and student government president. The cost of getting an associate’s degree is about $14,000 and about $25,000 for a bachelor’s degree.

“Coming to this school is important because the International College provides a great learning environment, which then goes on to give a great learning experience,” says Mr. Wilson. “One of the things that I really enjoy is that I get to meet new people from all different walks of life.”

Registration for the winter quarter is ongoing through December, so people who are thinking about getting their education on track in the New Year should contact the Admissions office, explained Mr. Wilson.  Classes start 7 January.
