Bermuda defeat Faroes in beach volleyball

Bermuda 2 Faroe Islands 0

The Bermuda I team of Yves Charbonneau and David Gazzard opened the men’s beach volleyball competition with a 2-0 victory over the Faroe Islands duo of Jens Heri Bolstad Mortensen and Alex Troleis at the National Sports Centre.

rglogo1Bermuda I won by scores of 21-13, 21-14 in the best-of-three match.

The Faroes, a self-governing region of Denmark, are located in the heart of the Gulf Stream halfway between Norway and Iceland. The 18 islands cover 545 square miles and have a population of approximately 49,000.

Bermuda I resume play tomorrow against Cayman II at 9am.

Men’s beach volleyball round robin action continues through Tuesday morning. Quarter-final action begins Tuesday at 4pm.

Jersey 2 Bermuda II 1

Jersey’s team of Paul Gartshore and Berislav Bobus defeated the Bermuda II duo of Sebastian Iaxx and Wesley Toavs 2-1 in a spirited match.

Playing before a boisterous crowd, Jersey prevailed 21-11, 22-24, 15-8.

Jersey is a British Crown Dependency located in the English Channel just off the coast of Normandy, France. The island has a population of approximately 98,000.

Bermuda II swings back into action tomorrow at 10 a.m. against Isle of Man, while Jersey takes on Saaremaa tomorrow (Monday) at 11 a.m.

Cayman I 2 Isle of Man 0

The Cayman Islands I team of Shervin Rankin and Richard Campbell evened their record at 1-1 with a 2-0 victory over Isle of Man on Sunday afternoon at National Sports Centre.

Cayman I won 21-6, 21-8.

Earlier in the day, Cayman I lost 2-0 to volleyball powerhouse Saaremaa.

The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory with a population of approximately 55,000. Cayman is located in the Caribbean Sea, south of Cuba.

The Isle of Man is a British Crown Dependency in the Irish Sea. The island has a population of approximately 85,000.

The Isle of Man swings back into action tomorrow at 10 a.m. against Bermuda II.

Menorca d Faroe Islands 2-0

The Menorca team of Ramon Linares and Jose Maria Olivar defeated the Faroe Islands duo of Jens Heri Bolstad Mortensen and Alex Troleis 2-0 in a hard-fought men’s beach volleyball match on Sunday afternoon.

Menorca prevailed 21-13, 21-17 to record their second victory on the opening day, having beaten Cayman II 2-0 earlier in the day. The Faroes are 0-2 after the first day of competition, having lost to Bermuda I earlier in the day.

Menorca, one of the Spanish Balearic Islands, has a population of approximately 95,000. The island is situated in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Faroes are next in action tomorrow at 7 p.m. against Cayman II, while Menorca take on Bermuda I on Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Menorca 2 Cayman II 0

The Menorca men’s team of Linares and Olivar defeated the Cayman II duo of Philippe Deslandes and Olney Thompson 2-0.

Menorca won by scores of 21-16, 21-16 in the best-of-three match.

Saaremaa 2 Cayman I 0

The Saaremaa team of Slim Polluaar and Keith Pupart defeated the Cayman I duo of Shervin Rankin and Richard Campbell 2-0.

Saaremaa won by scores of 21-16, 21-13.

Saaremaa is the largest island in Estonia. Situated in the Baltic Sea, it has a population of approximately 39,000.

Saarema are next in action tomorrow at 11am against Jersey.

Women’s Beach Volleyball

Gotland 2 Bermuda I 0

The Gotland team of Jenny Sander and Sofia Wahlen defeated the Bermuda I duo of Claudia Stich and Allison Lacoursiere 2-0.

Gotland won by scores of 21-12 and 21-15 in the best-of-three match.

Gotland are back in action tomorrow at 9 a.m. against the Faroe Islands, while Bermuda I take on the Cayman Islands tomorrow at 11 a.m.

Cayman Islands 2 Faroe Islands 0

The Cayman Islands team of Cristin Alexander and Jessica Wolfenden defeated the Faroe Islands duo of Lena i Bud and Gudrid Syderbo 2-0.

Cayman won by scores of 21-5, 21-15 in the best-of-three match.

The Faroes swing back into action tomorrow at 9am against Gotland, while Cayman take on Bermuda I tomorrow at 11am.

Women’s beach volleyball round robin action continues through on Monday evening. Quarter-final action begins Tuesday at 11am.

Menorca 2 Bermuda II 0

The Menorca team of Maria Bonafont and Vanesa Ruiz defeated the Bermuda II team of Stacey Dorush and Heather Wearmouth 2-0.

Menorca won by scores of 21-9 and 21-16.

Menorca are the reigning women’s beach volleyball gold medallists, having won the title in Rhodes in 2007, the only previous time the sport has been included in the Island Games.

Bermuda II is next in action tomorrow at noon against Jersey, while Menorca take on Jersey tomorrow at 6 p.m.

Nat West Island Games open in Bermuda

Final preparations are taking place in Bermuda ahead of the Nat West Island games opening ceremony this evening.

The event at the National Sports Centre Athletics track takes place at 7pm local time – around 11pm our time as Bermuda is four hours behind.

The Island will be competing with teams from around the world including Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Gotland and Cayman Islands.

One of the main events this evening will be the Water Ceremony, where each team brings in a sample of water from around their own Island to be added to a large water feature which forms a centrepiece of the event.

Competition proper gets underway tomorrow, when the Island’s badminton players will take on the Falkland Islands whilst in the beach volleyball event we’ll be playing the Caymans.

Dan Smith from the Island’s beach volleyball team says he’s looking forward to the competition.
