Let’s Move: Worldwide Olympic Partner Samsung launches Olympic Day Step Challenge to get people moving

International Olympic Committee

14 Jun 2023 – Worldwide Olympic Partner Samsung is celebrating this year’s Olympic Day under the global motto “Let’s Move” with the launch of an exciting challenge that aims to encourage users worldwide to log steps, stay active and embrace the significant health benefits of daily movement.

The Samsung Health Olympic Day Step Challenge, which is available in 17 countries and nine languages via the Samsung Health app, forms part of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s Let’s Move initiative, which aims to inspire and enable the world to move more every day.

Beginning on 7 June and running through to Olympic Day on 23 June, Samsung Health users are challenged to achieve an overall target of 100,000 steps per week. Throughout the challenge, participants will receive congratulatory messages as they reach key milestones, such as every 20,000 steps completed. These messages will not only celebrate their progress, but also serve as an invitation to join the broader Let’s Move initiative on Olympic Day. By visiting Olympics.com, individuals can discover how to further engage in this global movement.

Participants who manage to complete the whole challenge will be rewarded with a unique “Olympic Day Badge”, which will be displayed in the “My Page” section of the Samsung Health app.

With regular physical activity helping to prevent noncommunicable diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes and several cancers, the importance of living an active, healthy lifestyle is undeniable.

The world is moving faster than ever, but people are moving less. Research has found that one in four adults and over 80 per cent of young people do not meet the recommended minimum activity levels needed for optimum health (WHO, 2022). Not having enough time in the day is one of the most common reasons given for not being able to reach this goal. At the same time, starting with just 30 minutes of movement a day has significant health benefits for hearts, bodies and minds. But a 2022 report revealed that 81 per cent of adolescents and 27.5 per cent of adults are not meeting these goals.

The Let’s Move initiative shines a light on the benefits of moving more and contributes to the IOC’s Olympism365 strategy – one of the key aims of which is to increase access to sport opportunities and bring the health and societal benefits of physical activity to communities across all corners of the globe.

The Samsung Health Olympic Day Step Challenge will also contribute to this goal and marks the latest milestone in the ongoing partnership between Samsung and the IOC, which began when Samsung was a local partner of the Olympic Games Seoul 1988. The company then became a Worldwide Olympic Partner in 1997.
