John Gray High School wants volunteers to be mentors for its programme aimed at helping students realise their potential in both academics and life.

 

The Aim Higher initiative targets Year 10 students who are lagging behind in their studies and would benefit from one-on-one mentoring and coaching to boost their grades and personal development.

 

“It’s been proven over a number of countries where it operates that students can really benefit tremendously from a little one-on-one adult attention,” said Laura Hatfield, one of the program’s organizers. “The relationship is not within the context of a parent or teacher, but it is more of a collaborative role.”

 

Aim Higher is being organized and funded through the Cayman Islands branch of the nonprofit group International Women’s Insolvency and Restructuring Confederation. Ms Hatfield, a partner at law firm Solomon Harris, serves as the community affairs officer with the organization.

 

As of earlier this week, 15 volunteers had signed up as mentors.

 

The group is looking for another 25 volunteers.

 

Volunteers meet with students at the school once a week during lunch. The program begins the week of Oct. 7.

 

A weekend training course takes place beforehand, from Oct. 4-6. Being held at the Cayman Islands Law School, the training is designed to equip volunteers with such tools as study skills knowledge and active listening techniques.

 

Ms Hatfield said mentors also benefit from the program.

 

“There is a tremendous sense of achievement in helping a student achieve and succeed, and preparing them for what’s ahead,” she said.
