Houston’s Fannin Forms Company to Fight Inflammation-Induced Cancers

By Angela Shah From Xconomy

Houston’s Fannin Innovation Studio is forming a new biotech startup to add to its portfolio called ACF Pharmaceuticals, along with the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and a Michigan-based drug company.

ACF Pharmaceuticals, which will be based in Houston, will work closely with MD Anderson and Ann Arbor, MI-based Cayman Chemical on discovering and developing small molecule inhibitor to treat inflammation-induced cancers such as melanoma, as well as colon and pancreatic cancers.

“We’re looking at blocking that inflammatory pathway,” says Melissa Singh, a Fannin fellow and former MD Anderson postdoc, who is leading the ACF team. “The problem with some of the (therapies) that have been developed is that side effects have limited their use.”

Cayman Chemical will take the lead in drug discovery by working on the design, synthesis, and initial screening for therapeutic applications in cancer, fibrosis, inflammation, and pain. MD Anderson will evaluate molecule candidates and conduct animal studies in as soon as six months.

M.D. Anderson developed the initial technology and will continue to help validate progress, while Cayman has the expertise in developing molecules that would become drugs, says Atul Varadhachary, Fannin’s managing partner.

“We really need these three sets of capabilities,” he says. “IP does not even exist at this point. We are working together to generate IP so hopefully within a year we will have a lead molecule in place.”

ACF Pharmaceuticals is the latest company to be founded by Fannin, which functions as both an accelerator and a venture capital firm. Fannin currently has nearly a dozen portfolio companies, which include Acelerox, which was founded in February and aims to use nanoparticle technology to treat a variety of autoimmune and other disorders.

Another Fannin company is Procyrion, a medtech startup that is developing a circulatory support pump that is thinner than a pencil and can be implanted through a catheter in the aorta, the major artery coming from the heart. The device is designed to support heart failure patients by helping the damaged heart push more blood through the circulatory system and on to vital organs.

Trinidad attorney general signs authority to proceed in Warner extradition case

faris_al-rawiFrom Caribbean News Now contributor

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad — Trinidad and Tobago Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi has belatedly signed off on the US request for the extradition of former FIFA vice president Jack Warner to face multiple charges of racketeering, corruption and money laundering in New York.

This was announced on Monday morning when Warner reappeared in the Port-of-Spain Magistrate’s Court and lawyer, Fyard Hosein SC pointed out that Al-Rawi had missed last Wednesday’s deadline for doing so.

Although Hosein acknowledged that Al-Rawi had asked Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers Caesar for an extension of the deadline until Monday, no ruling had been given and, as a result, Hosein claimed that his client was entitled to be automatically discharged.

Lead counsel for the government, James Lewis QC, submitted that such a move would be strictly academic as Warner would be immediately re-arrested pending a renewed application by the US.

Lewis argued Warner should have applied to be discharged immediately upon the expiration of the deadline last week, which has now been rendered moot by the attorney general signing the authority to proceed in the case.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington presided over the hearing in the absence of Ayers Caesar and adjourned the case to Friday when he will hand down his ruling.

Tax evaders targeted in United States using Belize accounts

By Santiago From Financial Buzz

The authorities in United States have now started targeting Belize-based banks as an expansion towards their search of all those Americans who they suspect of tax evasion by hiding their undisclosed assets and incomes in offshore accounts. The approval to do so has been given on Wednesday by a Miami based federal court. The court gave approval for special legal summons of “John Doe” to seek income related information of all such U.S. taxpayers who may be holding undisclosed accounts at Belize Bank Limited or Belize Bank International Limited.

Court’s approval to go ahead

The Miami court authorized the federal investigators to see records of all those so-called Belize bank correspondent accounts that are maintained in Citibank (NYSE: C) and Bank of America (NYSE: BAC). The IRS can get great insights from all these bank accounts that allow foreign banks to handle financial transactions in U.S. dollars without the presence of the United States as the former can now identify all those U.S. taxpayers who either held or hold accounts at the different Belize financial institutions.

Such ‘John Doe’ summonses by the IRS authorities can provide in-depth information about all such individuals who have been using these Belize financial institutions as well as to the extent in which their funds were transferred to other jurisdictions. However, the acting Assistant Attorney General said that they have been getting information from various sources regarding details of hidden offshore schemes and foreign accounts.

Way forward for the IRS

A legal declaration issued by the IRS said that Belize Bank Limited is based in the Central American nations and owns the Belize Bank International Limited directly and is incorporated. Belize Corporate Services, another company offers the so-called paper companies, “shelf” corporations that can be regarded as the falsified owners of such offshore accounts.

According to the declaration made by the IRS, all the three above mentioned entities are corporate subsidiaries of the BCB Holdings Limited. The IRS’s declaration also described the review of a federal agent on information gathered from all those American citizens who had come forward as a part of a voluntary IRS disclosure program and shared information about their accounts that they held at some time at these Belize Banks.

Earlier in 2009, the U.S. investigators had also got the court’s approval for serving John Doe summonses on UBS, a Swiss banking giant which was the initial target while continuing with massive federal crackdown on cases of offshore tax evasion. UBS (NYSE: UBS), in turn had to disclose information on approximately its 4,450 U.S. clients.

Villa breaks SCCL goal mark in Queretaro win

Emanuel Villa (pictured) celebrates after scoring one of his record five goals in Queretaro’s Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League win over visiting Verdes FC on September 17, 2015, in Queretaro, Mexico. (Photo: Mexsport)

QUERETARO, Mexico — Emanuel Villa set a new record for the most goals scored in a single Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League game, striking for five as Queretaro boosted its Group C hopes with an 8-0 victory over Verdes FC on Thursday night at the Estadio La Corregidora.

Kevin Gutierrez, Antonio Naelson Matias “Sinha” and Danilo Veron each netted once to help the Gallos Blancos close out their group-stage schedule.

In order to progress to the quarterfinals, Queretaro (2W-1D-1L, 7 points) must hope that San Francisco FC (1W-0D-1L, 3 points) doesn’t post wins in its last two matches, both against eliminated Verdes FC (0W-1D-1L, 1 point).

Villa’s five-goal performance gives him 17 in his SCCL career, elevating him to fourth on the all-time list. He had a hat-trick by the 53rd minute, before adding a fourth in the 85th minute and a fifth just as stoppage time began.

It was Gutierrez, however, who opened the scoring in the 15th minute.

After Angel Sepulveda rose to win a contested header inside the penalty area, the ball rolled toward the edge of the 18, where Gutierrez thumped a first-time effort that slammed the inside of the right post before settling into the net. It was Gutierrez’s first career SCCL goal.

Villa made it 2-0 in the 30th minute on the first of two goals from a corner kick, beating his marker at the near right post to reach Gutierrez’s service and send a flashing header beyond goalkeeper Benito Morreira.

Shortly after halftime, Villa connected twice with Yerson Candelo to put the game out of reach.

On the first, Candelo sent in an early cross from the right to find Villa, who slid to knock home a left-footed finish from the edge of the 6-yard box. Next, Villa found space around the near post on a corner kick to outjump defender Chris Gillharry and head home Candelo’s outswinging ball.

The hosts added four goals more inside the final 10 minutes. In addition to Villa’s tallies during that stretch, Sinha (81’) and Veron (86’) found the back of the net.
