Foreign Office Minister Mark Simmonds visited Jamaica this week for the first time as Minister for the Caribbean. In meetings with government Ministers, Mr Simmonds discussed the strong links between the UK and Jamaica and explored further co-operation in areas of shared interest, including the promotion of bilateral trade and investment and tackling the threat to both countries from drugs and organised crime.

Speaking on his departure from Jamaica, Mark Simmonds said:

“My visit has been an excellent opportunity to celebrate the strong and enduring friendship between the UK and Jamaica. It has also been a chance to see first-hand how our two countries are working together to address modern global challenges and opportunities through trade and investment promotion and co-operation in the fight against international drugs and organised crime.”

During his visit, Mr Simmonds also met UK companies investing in Jamaica and leading members of Jamaican civil society, as well as visiting a UK Aid funded project providing training and job opportunities to inner-city communities in Kingston.
