Cayman Islands National Museum, Mastic Trail & App
Cayman Islands National Museum
This 19th century structure has been used as everything from the courts building to town jail to the place for Sunday worship, so it’s quite fitting that Cayman’s relatively brief but resourceful history is recorded here.
The museum contains more than 4,000 artifacts from the Island’s natural and cultural history including coins, fossils, cat boats, documents, art and crafts.
The museum shop was the first post office. Commissioner Fredrick Sanguinetti’s term of office is marked by the development of the post office and postal facilities. Established in 1890, the post office in George Town was housed here until a new facility was built in the centre of the capital. This small office held fewer than 10 postal boxes, for most mail was distributed to the public by hand. Prior to this we had to rely on mail services on seamen and friends in Jamaica.
Enjoy the cultural treasures of the people of Cayman. The current cultural patterns in Cayman are evolved from tradition and history. The collections provide a tangible connection to early Caymanians and their skills such as turtling and rope making, shipbuilding and entrepreneurial abilities which brought many Caymanians sound financial security. The objects in the museum account for this history, as well as the people who made history. From the earliest pioneers to the latest bankers this is, a celebration of their communities through objects they used and thoughts which they expressed.
Mastic Trail
Visitors who are truly passionate about nature can experience the Mastic, a deep forest trail that is one of the few untouched woodland areas remaining on Grand Cayman.
Located about 50-minutes from Seven Mile Beach, the two-mile Mastic Trail presents hikers with a vast array of woodland species whose evolution has been untouched by man for millions of years: banana birds, West Indian woodpeckers, Cayman parrots, Cuban tree frogs and numerous species of bats, butterflies, hermit crabs, lizards, iguanas, geckos and snakes (not to worry – none are venomous). Sheltered by rare trees including cedar, mahogany and mastic for which it is named, the trail also features black mangroves and the sturdy national tree, the silver thatch palm.
Tip: The terrain is flat but heat, humidity and absence of breeze can make the trek challenging. Explore the Mastic only with the National Trust’s knowledgeable experienced guides.
