News Americas, GLASGOW, Scotland, Mon. Aug. 4, 2014: The Caribbean region completed a 36 medal haul at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this past weekend, thanks largely to Jamaica’s stellar athletes.

The island’s Independence Day celebration certainly got off to an early start as Jamaica’s black, green, and gold dominated the field events to end with a massive 22 medal haul, the highest for any Caribbean nation.

Jamaica’s medal wins included 10 gold medals, four silvers and eight bronze.

The gold medal haul included the win by Jamaica’s 4×100-meter relay team Saturday that was anchored by non other than the world’s fastest man and the country’s top athlete – Usain Bolt.

Bolt, shook off the media controversy during the past week, to give fans at the Commonwealth Games a display of showmanship and speed.

Jamaica’s 4×100-meter relay team raced ahead of England in a games-record 37.58 seconds as the six-time Olympic gold medalist became a Commonwealth champion for the first time, enhancing the status of an event that can appear an anachronism in the modern world.

Jamaica set another Games record in winning the women’s 4×100-metre relay. In a race that wasn’t even close, the team of Kerron Stewart, Veronica Campbell-Brown, Schillone Calvert, and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce finished in 41.83. Nigeria won silver, while England took bronze.

The bronze medals also included wins by Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls netball team which defeated England 52-48 at Glasgow’s 10,000 seater Hydro on Sunday.

Trinidad & Tobago scored the second highest for the region ending with 8 medals. Three of those were silver and five, bronze.

The Bahamas ended the games with three medals – two silver and one bronze – while Grenada scored two – one gold and one bronze.

Barbados ended with one medal – a bronze.
