Cayman Islands Represented at Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation Leaders Seminar

CIASA Vice President, Michael Lockwood, recently attended the Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation (CCCAN) Leaders Seminar in Miami, Florida.

The Seminar was well attended by other CCCAN members and the seminar’s organisation, content, panel discussions and speeches were well received by attendees.

Michael Lockwood commented on the Seminar: “It is good for the CCCAN federations to come together in these types of forums to enhance fellowship and our unified position in the world of competitive aquatic sports”.

A wide range of aquatic sports topics were addressed including: competitive age group and elite swimming, masters and learn to swim, from the perspective of athletes, coaches, technical officials and FINA. Attendees were allowed to ask questions of the panellists and share ideas from their own Federation with a view to improving the quality of all aquatic sports.

Cayman Islands Olympic Swimmers Shaune and Brett Fraser, who now live and train in Miami, were invited to speak; as were other Caribbean Olympic Swimmers including Alia Atkinson of Jamaica and Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace of the Bahamas. Each of these Olympians discussed the many aspects of their success as Caribbean athletes and ways that each federation can improve.

Brett Fraser commented on his involvement in the conference, “The CCCAN Leadership Conference allowed me to share my thoughts and knowledge in hopes of promoting the future success of swimming within the Caribbean region. Representing the Cayman Island’s on the panel, I was able to provide feedback from experiences I have gained throughout my career, something every athlete should do in order to prepare the next generation for greatness.”

One of many exciting outcomes of the seminar is that many Caribbean Countries, the Cayman Islands in particular, can look forward to regional events and clinics being held in the near future.
