A new alternative treatment option for Caribbean women with Uterine Fibroids

Screen Shot 2015-11-12 at 10.30.04 AMMiami, Fla. (November 12, 2015) – A new minimally invasive treatment option is now available for Caribbean women suffering from symptomatic uterine fibroids, without damaging or having to remove the uterus requiring no hospitalization and very minimal time away from work, as compared to other procedures.

The minimally invasive treatment is offered at Tenet healthcare’s Good Samaritan Medical Center, which is the first hospital in Florida to offer the Halt Medical’s Acessa procedure.

The Acessa procedure utilizes a technology called radiofrequency ablation and treats each fibroid by applying energy through a small needle array. It is designed so that the surrounding normal uterine tissue should not be damaged or otherwise affected. Over time, the treated fibroid tissue shrinks and may become completely reabsorbed by the body. Acessa is performed under general anesthesia, and only two small (approximately ¼”) abdominal incisions are needed during the procedure. There is no cutting, suturing or removal of the uterus itself.

“The Acessa procedure, like a hysterectomy, is a treatment that addresses all fibroids, said Dr. Howard Goodman, a gynecologic oncologist on the medical staff at Good Samaritan Medical Center. “However, with Acessa, the goal is to do so without damaging or having to remove the uterus.”

“Women are looking for less invasive alternative treatment options, and we are excited to be among the first major health systems to bring this leading edge technology to patients in the Caribbean,” added CEO Mark Nosacka.

According to Mr. Nosakca, with our proximity to the Caribbean, Good Samaritan is easily accessible by a single direct flight from any geographic territory in the region.
