Why have they destroyed my Islands?

Brenda Quin

By Brenda Quin

Developers?

No.

They are the destroyers of our environment.

Dollar signs are their vision.

Rip out the mangroves.

Uproot the trees.

Shred the remains!

Gone are the habitats of birds, whistling ducks, and the bees.

Devastation greets us everywhere, on this our Island Home.

Greed and more greed.

An eventual sickness.

Pockets bulging with ill gotten gain.

Vast unattractive structures cover the landscape.

What will you do when tourism is no more?

There are still beauty spots around the globe

But Cayman will be a barren desert

Eventually swept away by angry seas.

What will you do with your millions?

They will bring no joy – only pain.

Destroyers listen to the cries of pain.

You can’t regain what you have destroyed.

THE END …… is yet to come.

Brenda Quin was born in 1928, a 4th generation Jamaican. Brenda was educated there and later at a Nursing school in Bermuda. She has lived in Cayman for the past 44 years. Much of her writing comes from nature.

Brenda has co-written with Peter Westin a book of poetry called “That Small Voice” and is available from local bookstores.
