Young Belizean detained pending extradition to the US

From Love FM

Last night (12) Love News told you about Deon Bruce, who was taken into police custody after a warrant had been issued on July 2 for his arrest. But Bruce’s detention is not a matter for the local courts but rather for the courts in the U.S.A. Belizeans authorities were reportedly planning to extradite Bruce to the US where it is alleged he was involved in a murder. But after Bruce got a hold of an attorney, he is challenging his extradition. This morning Bruce appeared in court with his attorney Bryan Neal and by his side who shared more about the circumstance of the matter. In addition, the family of Bruce is upset that authorities attempted to whisk away Bruce to the USA without care of due process.

Bryan Neal, Attorney

“Well there is a request from the United States Government that he be extradited to the United States to face various charges including murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery and possession of a firearm.

Hipolito Novelo, Reporter

“Which past of the US did this occur?”

Bryan Neal, Attorney

“In Chicago, Illinois; iIt is alleged that it was in Chicago.”

Reporter

“Can you tell us how does it look right now for your client?”

Bryan Neal, Attorney

“Well we don’t have the evidence that the United States is relying on. That will be provided on August the first. But just looking at the warrant of apprehension it said that he was born on the Cayman Island and my instructions are that he was born in Belize and he has never visited the Cayman Island. I was able to raise that objection a while ago. As well a warrant was not attached to the warrant of apprehension. So there are some issues that we intend to raise but we have to wait to get the documents from the United States. The warrant dates back to the year 2000. Last night Mr. Michael Peyrefitte, myself and Kareem Musa went to visit the prisoner at the Queen Street Police Station and we were not allowed to see him. Following the interview that Michael Peyrefitte gave then the powers came to be and so we saw him late last night.

Reporter

“Can you confirm whether or not if Mr. Bruce was residing in the US or visited the US during the alleged time that the incident occurred?”

Bryan Neal, Attorney

“I don’t know during the alleged time but at some point he was living in the United States and had recently returned to Belize about a year and a half ago.

Marlon Rodriguez, Family Member

“First of all, this thing I had always seen it in the movies and seeing it happening to us in reality is just- I am really upset about it. It’s not supposed to be like this.”

The case has been adjourned for August first.
