UWI Cave Hill students to have tuition talks with Barbados government

'Tuition fees' rise, photo-realistic signpost, isolated on a whiFrom Go-Jamaica

Students at the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies are seeking dialogue with the Barbados government following its decision to discontinue paying tuition fees for nationals studying at the tertiary institution.

The Student’s Guild also expressed disappointment that no representative of the Freundel Stuart administration attended a town hall meeting held on Thursday to discuss the issue, although an invitation was extended.

President the Student’s Guild, Damani Parris says the students plan to call on veteran trade unionist Sir Roy Trotman, the general secretary of the Barbados Workers Union (BWU) to mediate with the government on their behalf.

Stuart has defended his government’s decision to discontinue paying the tuition fees for students studying at the Cave Hill campus, saying that free tertiary education was never intended to last forever.

He says his administration wanted nationals to understand that the new policy is being implemented in an effort to ensure the economic stability of the island.
