UPDATE: Cayman police identify victim in West Bay Road Fatal Collision

Update (30 May):

Police can now confirm the identity of the deceased in the fatal collision which took place on the morning of Thursday, 26 May, on West Bay Road. He is 41-year-old Anwar Ali Bakari Abdurrahman, a Kenyan national residing in Cayman.

The RCIPS expresses condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.


Update (26 May, 1:00PM):

Shortly after 4:00AM today, 26 May, officers responded to a two-vehicle collision on West Bay Road, in the vicinity of Safehaven Drive, involving a Hyundai Santa Fe and a Honda Civic, each with a single occupant.

The driver of the Honda, who was trapped in the vehicle, was extricated by Fire Officers and transported to the Cayman Islands Hospital via ambulance. The man, age 41, was subsequently pronounced dead.

The driver of the Hyundai received non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Cayman Islands Hospital, treated and subsequently released. Following his release, the man, age 24 of West Bay, was arrested on suspicion of DUI. He has been bailed as investigations continue.

West Bay Road was closed temporarily following the accident, but has since been fully reopened.


Initial Release (26 May, 6:35AM):

Police are currently on the scene of a fatal two-vehicle collision which occurred shortly after 4:00AM this morning on West Bay Road, in the vicinity of Safehaven Drive.

Both lanes of West Bay Road are currently blocked between Lime Tree Bay Avenue and Gecko Link, as investigators process the scene. Traffic is currently being diverted onto the Esterley Tibbetts Highway and motorists should expect delays.
