Two Caymanians do well overseas in Women’s Football

Jessica Ebanks

For the fifth time in seven seasons, the No. 2 West Florida women’s soccer team won the Gulf South Conference Championship. The top seeded Argonauts cruised past No. 2 seed North Alabama in a 4-0 victory Sunday at Ashton Brosnaham Park.

UWF (19-1, 10-0), which had five athletes named to the GSC All-Tournament team, extended its winning streak to eight games and outscored its opponents 8-1 in two games in the GSC Tournament. It was UWF’s eighth conference championship since joining the GSC in 1996.

After an exciting and aggressive 26 minutes of play, all-tournament honoree Daniela Cruz (San Jose, Costa Rica/University of Costa Rica) was fouled in the penalty area while attempting a cross and the Argos were awarded a penalty kick.

Fifth-year senior and all-tournament honoree Tori Fish (Bellaire, Texas/Bellaire HS) scored on UNA’s freshman keeper Morgan Grace to put the Argos up 1-0 at the 26:20 mark. It was Fish’s fifth goal of the season and fourth in the last four games.

With momentum on their side, the Argos pulled away as Sashana Campbell (Manchester, Jamaica/Darton) grabbed a loose ball in UNA territory and sent it to all-tournament honoree Chelsea Palmer (Plano, Texas/Tyler JC) 25 yards away from the net near the top of the box. Palmer turned and shot into the corner past a diving keeper to put the Argos up 2-0 at the 30:16 mark.

But Campbell wasn’t finished. Monica Malavassi (San Jose, Costa Rica/University of Costa Rica) got the ball in UNA territory and sent a quick pass to Campbell making a run into the box. Campbell got the ball one-on-one with the keeper and scored with 38:42 on the clock to give the Argos a 3-0 lead going into the half.

Shelby Bush

After taking some of their starters out in the second half, the Argos showed their hustle and depth as Alisa Festagallo (Fort Pierce, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy) sent a long pass that bounced past the defense to Nathalia Cerceau (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/South Dakota) in the box. Cerceau took advantage of the opportunity to seal the win at 4-0 with 83:03 on the clock.

Argo keeper and all-tournament honoree Sarah Story (Hoover, Ala./Darton) recorded seven saves including a handful of diving grabs to ensure UWF’s 11th shutout of the season.

In addition, Shelby Bush (Shalimar, Fla./Darton) was named to the all-tournament team after scoring a goal against Alabama-Huntsville in a quarterfinal match Friday.

GSC Coach of the Year Joe Bartlinski won his fifth GSC Championship in 12 seasons, improved to 83-4-1 in GSC play and improved to 198-27-14 overall at UWF. If the Argos continue their success, Bartlinski would be going for the 200th win of his career at UWF in the third round of the NCAA Division II Tournament which would be a battle for the South Region championship.

UWF is likely to receive the No. 1 seed in the NCAA South Region when the NCAA Selection Committee announces the NCAA Division II Tournament selections Monday at 7:30 p.m. ET on www.ncaa.com.
