TRAINING TO HELP KIDS

FRC Development training 1GIS Spotlight this week highlights action that is underway to empower students, takes another look at how IT is supporting education in schools and then revisits the Mind’s Eye exhibit.

First, we train our sights on a new programme that involves the Education Department and the Family Resource Centre (FRC) joining forces to help kids deal with bullying in schools. Learn how trainers are working to provide students with a larger variety of tools that will help them stand up to negative behaviour by other children in a classroom setting.

After that, we re-enter schools to showcase once again the technology that is shaping the teaching environment. Join us to see how smartboards and other forms of interactive learning help to add an element of fun to lessons.

Finally, we take another look at iconic painter Miss Lassie’s house, which is now known as the Mind’s Eye exhibit.

CONFERENCE SEEKS TO ADDRESS MATERNAL MORTALITY IN LATIN AMERICA

Feeling BetterPosted by Carla Mackenzie From FIGO

A conference in Panama next week will see representatives of international governments and agencies convene to address maternal and child mortality in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Entitled ‘A Promise Renewed for the Americas: Reducing inequities in reproductive, maternal and child health’, the summit is expected to culminate in the signing of a ‘Panama Declaration’ – a document outlining delegates’ commitments to improving maternal and newborn health in the region.

“Countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have reduced maternal and child mortality significantly over the past two decades, but many mothers and children continue to die from preventable causes,” organisers commented.

The conference, which will take place between September 10th and 12th, is to be hosted by the government of Panama with the support of agencies including the World Health Organization, the United Nations Population Fund and the United States Agency for International Development.

They claim that despite Latin America and the Caribbean having achieved a 42.9 per cent decline in maternal mortality between 1990 and 2010 on average, different social, economic and ethnic groups exhibit substantial discrepancies.
