The Web is so broken I’m making another one, says Berners-Lee

By Gary Cutlack From Gizmodo UK

World wide web pioneer Tim Berners-Lee is clearly having a few sleepless nights about what his invention has done to humanity, with the connectivity legend saying the current front-facing part of the internet has become “an engine of inequity and division” so he’s, er, making a new one.

This current internet is so broken he’s not even going to bother trying to fix it. It’s an insurance write-off in need of a trip to the Swiss end-of-life clinic. Hence Berners-Lee has been working on an entirely new platform he calls Solid, explaining it with: “Solid changes the current model where users have to hand over personal data to digital giants in exchange for perceived value. As we’ve all discovered, this hasn’t been in our best interests. Solid is how we evolve the web in order to restore balance  –  by giving every one of us complete control over data, personal or not, in a revolutionary way.”

It sounds like it’s the current internet only with lots of boring options and buttons to click and decide what happens to your data, but as long as it’s got 1990s music videos on it and an endless stream of wrong opinions to scroll through so we never have to face up to being bored, we’re sold.
