The Editor Speaks: Why wasn’t the pregnant unmarried teacher’s work permit renewed by Christian school?

Colin WilsonwebThat is a good question and the answer is ……..??

I am referring to iNews Cayman’s story published on June 8 2014 “Protests continue on Christian school’s decision” at: http://www.ieyenews.com/wordpress/protests-continue-on-the-cayman-prep-schools-decision-not-to-renew-teachers-contract-since-she-became-pregnant-and-is-not-married/

The report concerns the decision of Cayman Prep School, a private Christian School run by the United Church of Cayman, not to renew the contract of one of their popular teachers. Was it because she became pregnant and is not married?

Certainly over 400 people think this was the reason as they have signed an online petition demanding her reinstatement.

Even though various media houses have asked the school for the reason for the non renewal the school of course would not say because it is confidential.

Unfortunately they evaded the question with typical gobbledygook such as: “The board remains committed to providing a supportive educational environment which values a unified culture where everyone is treated with respect, fairness and dignity.”

Gobbledygook must be a popular English course as so many in government or similar institutions can produce many words that don’t mean anything when lumped together in long sentences.

The Prep school has no obligation to renew anyone’s work permit unless the contract the teacher signed says differently. And that is where one of the issues stands, what does the contract say?

I don’t know.

However to me the more important question is, what is the moral issue and how does it relate to Christian values?

Upon scouring the Internet there are many cases, especially in Roman Catholic schools, where teachers have been immediately fired for becoming pregnant outside marriage.

This happened in New York where a teacher who was employed at a preschool got pregnant and decided to keep the child.

The school said: “The school requires its teachers to convey the faith, to convey the gospel values and Christian traditions of the Catholic faith. The teachers’ handbook clearly states that teachers “must convey the teachings of the Catholic faith by his or her words and actions.”

When the school says “Catholic” faith I presume they mean their ROMAN Catholic faith. The word Catholic actually means the worldwide universal Christian church not just Roman.

I was brought up as an Anglo Catholic not a Roman Catholic and it irks me how the Romans feel they are the only faith that is Catholic and can drop their Roman pre-fix.

But I digress.

If the father of the baby had come forward and worked at the same school would he have been fired, too? Or is it a policy that applies only to women?

Another question. Can firing pregnant schoolteachers who work at Christian schools encourage and promote abortion?

Yes another question. Is it the actual act of intercourse outside of wedlock that is against the moral Christian code or is it just the fact the female became pregnant?

If a teacher goes to her priest (presumably a Roman Catholic) and confesses she has had sex outside of marriage and is employed at the same church school he administers to, does he encourage her to leave her job?

Another Question. What message does the firing of the pregnant teacher convey to the children at the school of one parent families?

Question. Does the firing of the pregnant teacher encourage or dissuade non-Christians from becoming Christians?

And the most ridiculous reason I found for dismissing a pregnant unmarried teacher is this one from Dr Ron Taylor, headmaster of Heritage Christian Academy in Rockwall, Texas:

“It’s not that she’s pregnant. The issue here is being an unmarried mother.” He then adds, “Everything that we stand for says that we want our teachers, who we consider to be in the ministry, to model what a Christian man or woman should be.”

So the issue then is the gift from God? The gift of a woman becoming with child. Whether a woman is married or unmarried has no distinction with God blessing the woman with child. I suggest Dr. Taylor reads the Old Testament.

If the Cayman Prep teacher had been secretive about her pregnancy, gone somewhere quiet and had an abortion, would her work permit application been submitted? Did they ask her who the father was and if he was a teacher at the school? If he was and on a work permit would his have been submitted?

The sin is in the act not the result. He who is sinless cast the first stone.

All this speculation is because the Cayman Prep have not clarified the fact the unmarried teacher is pregnant had nothing to do with their decision not to renew her work permit.

If the 400 signatures on the petition to have the teacher reinstated equated in the threat of 400 pupils being removed from Cayman Prep would that make a difference?

So many questions and no real answers except the missing word in all this is – the word LOVE.

And it is the LOVE the teacher has for her unborn child the reason she hasn’t gone to have an abortion.

And the moral of all this is…………?
