The Editor Speaks: Police going “great guns”

It’s about time we gave some kudos to the Cayman islands RCIPS. We are quick to malign them but not so quick to congratulate them.

Have you noticed what has been happening recently? Arrests and more arrests followed by charges being brought against our criminal fraternity who are intent on ruining all our lives.

I say “well done”.

Yes. We all know it can all go wrong by the time it gets to court because of “technicalities” and someone not doing his job properly. Evidence going astray. But folks, only twelve months ago we didn’t even get to this stage!

There are many police officers working very hard on our behalf and with not the monetary incentives, like the ones our politicians get (and some there we don’t get value for money).

How would you feel being out on the streets with a pair of handcuffs, a whistle, a baton, a flashlight and a cell phone as your means of defense knowing that the person you stop and/or pullover may be carrying a gun?

We have had a number of instances where the RCIPS have stopped a car and found ammunition and weapons that could have been used against them. The latest incident (last Thursday 12th) involved a 16 year old boy. Yes, you did read it correctly. SIXTEEN YEARS OLD!

He was arrested after officers responded to a report of a burglary and the person who was responsible for the break-in had left the scene in a stolen Honda CRV. A short time later officers saw the vehicle and the driver of the CRV was apprehended after he stopped and ran from the vehicle. A firearm and ammunition was recovered. The person was a sixteen year old boy.

Sixteen and not so sweet. Barely left school and already starting a profession that can only lead one way. Who do we blame for this.

There are many candidates but the main one are his parents. His friends. His family. AND HIMSELF!

With all the poverty there is in this world and all the millions suffering from it can you imagine if they all decided to take up a life of crime? Why don’t they? Because they know it is wrong and they are decent human beings. They do not want to be one of the scum bags of society.

I expect the poor underprivileged teenager will be protected by the Court system. We will learn what a hard sixteen years of life the poor boy has had. The “bad company” he has been in. He had a gun and weapons. He robbed and he stole a car. He could have killed someone. An innocent. It could have been you and even worse, ME!

Please keep up the good work RCIPS and maybe, just maybe, the idea of living on easy street by robbing, brandishing guns and acting like a piece of vermin will not be such an attractive proposition for another 16 year old.

The only “great guns” will be our police.
