The Editor Speaks: How can Meals on Wheels be lacking in funds?

Colin WilsonwebEven in these times of hardship how can Grand Cayman’s Meals on Wheels be lacking in funds that it has had to close its services to the Eastern Districts?

By many countries standards we are still living in an affluent society even now.

It is therefore a disgrace to every one of us living here we can allow a charity that caters to provide one good meal a day for our senior citizens to lack the necessary funds.

The welfare of our people must come first. We all will become old – senior citizens.

Senior citizens have paid their dues to our society. They have lived the life. At the very least surely every one of us can find a few dollars a week to help this charity

The meals they provide cost just under $5 each to prepare by my rough calculations.

If 20,000 of us just gave $1 a month to the charity they would have more than enough to carry on. Just think about $1 a MONTH!!!!

So it is a disgrace.

The government gives a grant of $3,800 per month so they are doing their bit.

Someone said when you reach 60 you are now entering your golden years. They didn’t call it paper years. It was meant to be something to look forward to.

We do not look upon ourselves as a third world country but when it comes to our senior citizens we are.

There are no social security benefits for the aged. There are no discounts at stores for the aged. There are no free rides on public transport for the aged. There are no free drugs for the aged.  There are no free medical services including dental for the aged. There are no free anything for the aged.

There is not even a free meal for the aged in the Eastern Districts and that could spread to the whole island.

Shame on everyone of us!

  1. I couldn’t agree more. I’m relocating to Cayman in a few months and I went looking for volunteer opportunities on the island. Meals On Wheels serves a generation of people who protected us when we were children. They served our food or perhaps, educated us. In return, all they need in exchange for a lifetime of service to humanity is one hot meal a day? That such an affluent locale cannot find the willingness to accomplish that simple request isn’t just shameful but dishonorable.
I expected better. All of that money and yet, no class. What a waste.
