The Editor Speaks: A very unappealing appeal

Colin WilsonwebWords rarely fail me but they have almost this time.

I am referring to the appeal filed in the courts on Friday (23) on Cayman Islands Chief Justice’s decision regarding the election of Tara Rivers in which he ruled for her on both counts.

I cannot comprehend the motivation behind the reason for challenging Chief Justice Anthony Smellie’s decision that was welcomed by nearly all four corners of the Cayman Islands. Whatever it is, it cannot be construed for the betterment of our country.

It is annoyingly selfish and smacks of personal vendetta that is not limited to the filer of the appeal, Gordon Hewitt, a man I have known a very long time and have regarded as a friend.

There is another force behind this and I would bet my life on it.

The Independent Observers sent here to watch and report on our election picked up the issue of residency and strongly advised it should be changed as it was prohibitive.

If the persons behind this appeal had one grain of love for their country and respect and wanted what was the very best governance in these difficult times, they would not have commenced even with the first appeal.

I actually gave them some benefit of the doubt saying it was good to get the matter of dual passport and learning abroad properly ruled on. It was. Most comprehensively.

The absolute nonsense filed by Hewitt and his legal team that the errors made by the Chief Justice are constitutional and of great public importance could easily be tested by a National Poll.

The most important thing is the people’s choice of who runs it. It wasn’t the choice of the people of West Bay that Velma Hewitt was to be elected to represent them. They elected Tara Rivers who is not only representing them but she is also a government minister. A government minister who is not even a member of the ruling government’s political party. The fact that her credentials are so good this was overlooked shows the high regard the Island’s premier Alden McLaughlin has for her.

Mrs Hewitt you came a very distant fifth way behind M/s Rivers who came second.

The people spoke then. The people spoke again when they applauded the Chief Justice’s ruling.

Put personalities and pride aside. This appeal is not for the good of this country.

The appeal is most unappealing.
