The 2012 Lions Sprint Meet

“Fun, Fast and Exciting. The season’s most popular sprint meet, sponsored by The Lions and free to all swimmers was, once again, a hit for all swimmers.”

Stingray Swim Club, Grand Cayman, 6 June 2012: The Lions Aquatic Centre, the Lions Club and Stingray Swim Club (SSC) hosted the 35th Annual Lions Sprint meet and saw 121 swimmers, including 17 from Cayman Brac’s Brac Barracudas (BRAC).

Competing in Sprint distances in each of the strokes: 25m for 6 & Under and 7-8; and 50m for the 10 & Under, 11-12, 13-14 and 15 & Over age groups and the 100m IM (starting with 8 & Unders). “The Lions Sprint Meet is free to every child who wants to swim in the Cayman Islands,” said Lion President Mitch Ebanks. “This year, Lion John Edward Ebanks took part as timer for the 35th consecutive year. Thank you to all the Lions who come out and support this meet every year, and thank you too, to the Stingray Swim Club who organise it, the Officials who volunteer and the swimmers who come out and compete.”

The Lions Club sponsored medal, ribbons and trophies and the Competitive Age Group, High Points Winners were: GIRLS: 6 & Under, Veandra Robinson, BRAC; 7-8, Keira Bodden, BRAC; 10 & Under Alison Jackson SSC, Jade Barnes, CBAC; 11-12, Kavanagh Lambert, CBAC; 13-14, Bethany Cleaver, CBAC and 15 & Over, Catriona Macrae, SSC. BOYS: 6 & Under, Kyan Dilbert, BRAC; 7-8, Corey Westerborg, SSC ; 10 & Under Zachary Moore, CBAC; 11-12, Rory Barrett, CBAC; 13-14, Simon Butler, SSC and 15 & Over, Alex McCallum, SSC.

All the swimmers put in great performances with the Brac Barracudas coming off the Lions Brac Meet just two weeks earlier. Also coming off recent competition, Stingray’s Corey Westerborg set a new Freestyle SC record for the 7-8 Boys when he lowered his own 50m Butterfly record.

Stingray President, Brenda McGrath commented: “The Lions Sprint Meet is an important one for our club as the Lions Aquatic Centre is the facility where all Stingray Swim Club members have the opportunity to train. We are greatful to the Lions Club for their continued commitment to the community in general and we encourage everyone to support their many, worthty initiatives.
