St Matthew’s University, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

med_mission_why_smuProviding quality education focused on the success of their students is the foundation of St. Matthew’s University (SMU). Their faculty and staff are as committed to your dreams as you are, and their small class sizes mean you receive personalized attention.

Since 1997, more than fifteen hundred students have obtained their MD and DVM degrees from SMU. Their graduates have earned residencies and/or permanent licensure in more than 40 states in the U.S., Canada, and numerous other countries. Their students achieve exceptional scholastic success, with U.S. licensing examination pass rates comparable to U.S. schools and well above the average of other non-U.S. schools.

newweb8SMU is located on the beautiful and safe Caribbean island, Grand Cayman. The island offers a highly developed infrastructure, including two state-of-the-art hospitals, hundreds of restaurants, world class hotels, and a thriving tourist industry. Grand Cayman is an hour’s flight from Miami, and has direct flights from many U.S. and Canadian cities.

newweb9No other medical school faculty is as committed to the success of students as the dedicated team of educators at St. Matthew’s University. For each of the Basic Science courses, the faculty offer at least ten general review sessions outside of normal class times. These sessions, available to any and all SMU students, review the key points covered in the course.

All Basic Science faculty offer small group tutoring sessions, which provide practice exam questions and other practical techniques from improving students’ test-taking skills. Finally, after each exam, faculty schedule one-on-one time with students with poor exam results to review the areas where the individual student struggled with the material.

A dynamic environment for research is accomplished through embedding research across the basic and clinical science curriculum. Students assimilate content through critical reading, thinking, Internet research, and participating in research, epidemiological, and interview-based studies approved and monitored by St. Matthew’s Institutional Review Board. For example, the course in Biostatistics Epidemiology & Evidence Based Medicine introduced in Fall Semester 2008 the assessment of student research by examination, commencing in that semester with Evidence Based Medicine and epidemiological studies to classify the migraines and identify associated factors. The further experience of students is achieved through the intellectual discussions offered by the ongoing research seminar series, a student Research Club, personal research with preparation of posters, and participation in dedicated research days. Throughout the courses, integration of an inquiry-based focus curriculum offered through the research emphases allows our students to evaluate medical content and significance more deeply, thereby ensuring greater retention through meaningful learning.

This training goes beyond the classroom into the community involving patient-contact activities and public clinical screening studies, including collaborations with the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority and the Cayman Heart Foundation. Such a learning environment provides a seamless transition from the basic to the clinical sciences program and further into their advanced clinical training. The intention of the medical program is to ensure that our students are adept at translating or applying their knowledge of basic science to the clinical setting.
