The Cayman Islands toppled Bermuda on Saturday. The 28-15 away victory places Bermuda’s quest to remain in the Rugby Americas North – North Zone Championship Division in doubt. Doing so will depend on the result of their match against the USA South Panthers in two weeks time.

Bermuda were overpowered by the Caymans. The home side trailed 17-0 at half time, requiring an extraordinary turnaround to come away with a win. The task was too much, though Bermuda was the better side in the second half.

The Cayman Islands opened the scoring in the 7th minute. Crossing was David Acutt and his try was converted by Morgan Hayward. Try number two came in the 21st minute with Morgan Shelver going over and Hayward adding the conversion to make it a 14-0 lead.

Hayward added a penalty to extend the away team’s lead to 17-0. The scoreline could have been even greater for the Cayman Islands had Hayward not missed two penalty kicks.

The second half got under way with the Cayman Islands scoring again. Venasio Tokatokavanua crossed to make it 22-0. It also saw Bermuda respond with urgency. Dan Cole went over for an unconverted try.

An additional try made it a 12 point game. Debutant Brynley Toms scored Bermuda’s second but with both tries unconverted Bermuda had 10 rather than 14 points.

The Cayman Islands hit back through Hayward. He landed two penalties to put the visitors 18 points clear. A late try from Darren Richardson ensured that Bermuda would finish well. It was again unconverted which meant that Bermuda scored 15 points for the match.
