Rebecca Pearce isn’t the only exchange chief to resign after tropical vacation

Rebecca Pearce: You are not alone.

In a scenario similar to what played out two weeks earlier in Maryland, the executive director of Minnesota’s health insurance exchange resigned Tuesday evening after facing criticism for a botched website launch and a tropical vacation.

April Todd-Malmlov had led MNsure since its start in 2011.

For those of you who don’t remember, Pearce resigned from her position as executive director of Maryland’s exchange late on a Friday, the same day after it was made public that she had jetted off to the Cayman Islands over Thanksgiving. And while Maryland’s exchange website has improved (Gov. Martin O’Malley has said the nine most troublesome issues he prioritized have been fixed) the site is still among the most glitch-riddled in the country.

While Pearce sought reprieve in the Caribbean, Todd-Malmlov headed to Costa Rica.

A handful of state exchanges are still experiencing technical issues and Pearce and Todd-Malmlov were in charge of two of them. The executive director of Hawaii Health Connector, another state-based exchange with a rocky October launch, announced in November that she was resigning.

Who’s next? And where should they head for their piña colada?
