Winning and dominating the last day of competition at North Sound Golf Club in the Cayman Islands, with 151 points in the team scoreboard. The Dominican Republic, which actually posted a better third-round score than the winners, totaled 139 points and leapfrogged Trinidad & Tobago (135) for 2nd place.

But once again, it was the team’s female contingent which guided the squad to victory. Our female players took first place on all three age categories. In the 16-17 division, Gabriela Santini shot a third-round 76 for a final score of 228 (+12). Gabriela had to share the individual title with Christina Ferreira of Trinidad & Tobago, whose final round of 73 elevated her into a tie for 1st place. Kristina Ortiz shot 75 on Friday and finished in 3rd place, two strokes back.

She finished with a total of 235 (+19), just one stroke ahead of her teammate Alexandra Vélez, who carded a 78 on the last day of play and claimed 2nd place.

Meanwhile, in the 11-13 group, Valeria Pacheco saved her best for last, posting the best round of the tournament across both genders and all age groups with a 68. That score gave her a 54-hole total of 212 (-4) also the best of any player, and a full 20 stroke margin of victory over her closest competitor. Paola Delgado who finished in 5th place.

While the boys failed to take home any individual titles, they collectively put together solid performances that produced several top-5 finishes. With final-round scores of 75 and 79, respectively, Melvin Morales and Ian Aldarondo held on to 2nd and 3rd place in the 11-13 division that was dominated by Dominican Juan Cayro Delgado (+2). Morales finished the tournament at +10, and Aldarondo at +15.

Meanwhile, Leslie Rivera had one of the best rounds (73) of the day in the 14-15 division and finished at +8, climbing all the way up to 4th place. Kenneth Martínez carded a final-round 78 and finished 5th, one stroke behind Rivera, while Rubén Rodríguez placed 16th. Trinidad & Tobago’s Sachin Kumar, the only player besides Pacheco to fnish the tournament under par (-1), won the category.

Trinidad & Tobago also claimed victory in the 16-17 group, as Matthew Márquez carded a 76 on Friday to finish the event at even par and close out his second straight victory in this category. Puerto Rico’s Felipe Colón, Jr., had an outstanding day with a final-round 70 that gave him a final score of 228 (+12), good for 7th place. Team captain José Cardona finished 8th, two strokes back of Colón, while Daniel Cabán placed 11th.

The successful 26th Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships were made possible by the combined efforts of the Caribbean Golf Association, under its president Sidney Wolf, and the gracious hosts from the Cayman Islands Golf Association and North Sound Golf Club. The Puerto Rico Golf Association congratulates its players for another championship performance, and all the great junior golfers in the Caribbean for their participation.

Great job to all our players, we are extremely proud of all of them! Thanks to the PRGA for keeping us updated with everything that went on at the Cayman Islands!
