PPM slams Bush’s absence

Alden McLaughlin PPM leader

In a press release on 16th October the People’s Progressive Movement (PPM) said they had “deep” concerns “with the ongoing absence of the Premier from the country.”

They also said, ” Not only has the Premier been frequently absent for long periods at times, with the public not being advised of the reasons for his absence from the Islands, but recently we also see that the Deputy Premier was at the same time visiting Qatar for a Postal Union conference.”

They accused the United Democratic Party (UDP)’s leadership, particularly the Premier, for the reason (in part) why “the Cayman Islands seem to be regularly adrift, or on autopilot but going around in circles.”

They pointed out the following lapses of the UDP:

a) No major decisions can be made whilst the leadership is away, they said, the Legislative Assembly (LA) cannot meet  “and so the business of the country is not getting done.”

b) There is the failure to pass the Framework for Fiscal Responsibility into law within the timeline Mr Bush agreed with the UK.

c) Failure to resolve the question as to what Districts the additional MLA seats (as required by the constitution) will be assigned to in good time for the elections next year.

They also asked who is in charge?

The islands are “in limbo whilst the Premier is on an ongoing world excursion,” they slammed, saying it was “unacceptable and the people of the Cayman Islands deserve better.”

Finally they (the PPM) call on the UDP Government to explain the whereabouts of the leadership as well as to ensure that important matters are not delayed and receive due attention.
