Pensioners robbed in own home

An elderly couple woke up in the middle of the night to find three masked men in her house.

And when her husband confronted them one of the gang pulled a gun before fleeing what’s thought to be cash and electrical goods.

The robbery happened 2.30am Thursday morning at a house on Magellan Quay.

A spokeswoman for the RCIPS said: “West Bay detectives are investigating an aggravated burglary at the home of an elderly couple in the Magellan Quay area.

“About 2.30 am today, the couple who are in their 80’s, awoke and disturbed three masked intruders.

“It would appear that one of the three suspects was in possession of what appeared to be a firearm; the intruders demanded cash from the couple.

“One of the victims was able to activate the burglar alarm and the three intruders ran off from the house. It has not yet been established what has been stolen.

“The victims are not injured, but have been left shaken by the ordeal.

“The only description available for the suspects at this time is that they all wore dark clothing and their faces were covered.”

A police car heading to the incident was involved in a smash on Shedden Road.

The spokeswoman added: “The RCIPS is also in a position to confirm that one of the marked police vehicles which was responding to the report of the incident was involved in a collision with another vehicle in the vicinity of Jacques Scott at the junction of Shedden Road.

“As is normal policy following a collision, both drivers were required to take breath tests. The police driver passed this test and the other driver, who refused to take the test, was arrested on suspicion of DUI. He has been bailed to appear at court at a later date. Following the collision the police driver attended hospital, at this moment in time her injuries are not believed to be serious.

Police enquiries are ongoing and anyone who has any information which could assist the police is asked to call West Bay CID on 949-3999, the RCIPS Tip-Line on 949-7777 or Crime Stoppers 800-8477 (TIPS).
