6feb893c-f64f-4688-9c80-3a07895d72c3Health City Cayman Islands is pleased to announce the launch of its comprehensive oncology services, complete with resident oncologist, Dr Vineetha who will be heading the hospital’s Department of Medical Oncology.

Dr Vineetha completed medical school in 2001, and undertook her residency in Internal Medicine at the prestigious Central Government Institute JIPMER in Pondicherry, India. She then worked at the Institute of Haematology at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, Australia from 2005 until 2007, where she developed an interest in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation. She completed her specialist training in Medical Oncology in Bangalore, India and was a consultant in Medical Oncology at the Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Centre, Narayana Health, Bangalore, India, before joining Health City Cayman Islands.

Dr Vineetha brings with her a wealth of experience, having been part of the Oncology and transplantation team at Bangalore that has performed autologous and allogeneic transplants including Cord, MUD and Haplo-identical stem cell transplants. She is certified by the European Society for Medical Oncology for excellence in Oncology.

“Health City is very much looking forward to working with the medical community and in particular with the Cayman Islands Cancer Society in our mission to treat, manage and hopefully prevent cancer,” Dr Vineetha said. “We are currently preparing a series of continuing medical education seminars for Cayman’s medical community, the first of which is scheduled for Friday March 27 between 6 and 9pm at Grand Cayman Beach Suites. The title is Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in Oncology – where do we stand in 2015? We anticipate this topic will stimulate much discussion among the medical community and look forward to continuing such dialogue in the months to come.”

The Department of Medical Oncology at Health City Cayman Islands has been established to focus on the diagnosis and treatment of various cancers using chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, biological therapy and targeted therapy.

As with all departments at Health City Cayman Islands, the Oncology Department aims to provide the highest quality of individualised care in a compassionate and caring setting with medical and nursing professional support available on site for the patient at any phase of their chemotherapy cycle or supportive care regime. The dedicated Oncology Day Care Unit can accommodate two patients at a time and provides a calm and comfortable environment for patients during their therapy.

Medical Oncology services are broad and cover treatment for a wide range of cancers, including cancers of the breast, lung, brain, lymphomas and chronic leukaemia, among many others. Supportive care such as helping to manage adult cancer pain, palliative care, antiemesis, transfusions, prevention and treatment of cancer related infections, distress management and survivorship are also available.

“We are also delighted to offer patients diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, such as bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, image-guided biopsy (ultrasound/CT), bone scan, thyroid scan, lumbar puncture and intrathecal chemotherapy, paracentesis and thoracentesis,” she said. “In fact, we offer an extremely wide selection of oncology services that will prove to be a huge complement to the existing services already available at Health City Cayman Islands.”
