OMOV is not an option this time out

images-1With the Elections Supervisor, Kearney Gomez and leader of the Opposition, Alden McLaughlin, both saying the switching of the May General Elections to single member constituencies is almost impossible, it is not going to happen.

Gomez said, “It’s cast in stone. We cannot accommodate it now. The writ is already there. We cannot withdraw the writ.”

McLaughlin also said the same thing adding there were many legal barriers that would delay the election and he wondered if this was what the Coalition for Cayman (C4C) group had in mind when they issued their statement recently calling for its implementation.

He also accused the group of misleading the public as to what was possible and what was not.

He also couldn’t understand why at this time the C4C were raising it when there were far more pressing issues.

Only the Independent member for East End, Arden McLean and North Side member, Ezzard Miller have said they will raise and vote for it in the Legislative Assembly.

Miller has said it would require only a minor amendment to the law to implement a One Man One Vote (OMOV) if each elector at the election was given only one vote no matter which district they vote in and then the appropriate number of the top candidates for each district will be elected. Therefore in George Town the first six candidates past the post would win.

McLaughlin was not in favour of that.
