Nursing award presented

bannerThe Eloise Reid Excellence in Nursing Award was launched six years ago and it is awarded each year at the annual Cayman Islands National Nursing Conference during Nurses Week.

The award is named after Eloise Reid, who retired from the Health Services Authority in 2005, serving in a variety of roles, including chief nursing officer and chief executive officer. In 1991, Queen Elizabeth II conferred on Mrs. Reid the Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, or MBE, award for her services to health care in the Cayman Islands.

The purpose of the award is to give recognition to registered nurses in the Cayman Islands who have demonstrated excellence in the application of the Standards for Nursing Practice and Code of Ethics, and who have made outstanding contributions to the nursing profession in clinical practice.

The awards selection committee will consider a number of criteria in selecting a recipient of the award, including if an individual holds high ethical standards in the delivery of care and in all professional relationships; serves as a resource for colleagues and takes the initiative to mentor others; has an impact on the quality patient care system wide; advances and promotes the practice of nursing by contributing to nursing and health policy through participation on committees at the local, or national level executives; promotes the image of nursing by acting as a positive role model; acquires new learning and incorporates this in the practice environment; and demonstrates strong leadership and interpersonal skills.

This year the award went to public health nurse and school health coordinator, Joanna Rose-Wright, who said after accepting the award on Tuesday 7th May, “Nursing is really my passion. I was a nurse before I went to nursing school. From the day I passed human and social biology, I pronounced myself a nurse and did not even apply to nursing school, but I was a nurse from that time.

“I’m a nurse at heart. I love nursing. I see myself in the future as a nursing consultant, doing something in nursing until I can‘t do it anymore.”

Nurses Jolene Toney finished second and Olga Robb-Wright was placed third.

The presentation was made just prior to the nursing conference.

The 8th Annual National Nursing Conference took place May 8th, 9th and 10th 2013 at the Marriott Grand Cayman Beach Resort, West Bay Road, Grand Cayman with the theme “Embracing Diversity in Nursing Care: Achieving Successful Patient Outcomes”.
