Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich harshly criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for ripping up her copy of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address following the speech on Tuesday.

“As Speaker of the House for four State of the Unions by a president of the other party I am disgusted and insulted by the viciously partisan action of Nancy Pelosi tearing up the speech,” Gingrich wrote Wednesday morning on Twitter. “She isn’t clever or cute. Her childishness insults our American traditions – should be censured.”

Pelosi told Fox News she took the action “because it was the courteous thing to do considering the alternatives. I tore it up. I was trying to find one page with truth on it. I couldn’t.”

When Trump handed her a copy of the speech before his address began, Pelosi offered her hand for a handshake, but the president appeared to reject the gesture.

Gingrich’s suggestion that Pelosi be censured came one day after Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., proposed a resolution for Trump to be censured for his actions in trying to pressure Ukraine to probe his political rivals for corruption.

Other figures on the right joined Gingrich in criticizing Pelosi for tearing up the speech, with the White House saying that doing so disrespected those who had been honored in Trump’s address who had served the country.
