Marriage Equality Is Under Threat In The Cayman Islands

GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS, 18 October 2021:

SUMMARY:

Colours Caribbean and His Excellency the Governor of the Cayman Islands, Martyn Roper, join in the fight against Kattina Anglin to defend civil partnerships for same-sex couples.

ARTICLE:

Tomorrow, at 1:30PM in Courtroom 5, there will be a hearing at the Courthouse to determine the future of same-sex couples in the Cayman Islands. Kattina Anglin—a member of the conservative group, the Christian Association for Civics (CAC)—has challenged the Governor’s use of Section 81 of the Constitution to legalise civil partnerships and threatens to undo all of the progress our LGBTQIA+ community has made in the long journey towards achieving marriage equality.

Colours Caribbean will be acting as intervenor, representing gays, lesbians, bisexuals and anyone else who depends on the new Civil Partnership Law to be legally recognised as a couple in the Cayman Islands, allowing for the sharing of property, joint custody of children, among many other substantial benefits typically afforded only to different-sex married couples.

The legalisation of civil partnerships a mere year ago in 2020 was a considerable milestone for our LGBTQIA+ people. Now, Kattina Anglin hopes to dismantle the legislation allowing for same-sex civil partnerships, effectively ripping apart all of the couples who took advantage of the new law, after years of being denied the right to marry.
