Maples partner among quartet of Cayman lawyers to take silk

Maples and Calder litigation Colin McKie has been appointed as a QC in the first round of silk appointments in the Cayman Islands for three years.

The appointments were approved last week by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on the advice of the Cayman judiciary. As well as McKie, Ian Paget-Brown, chair of the Cayman Law Reform Commission, deputy director of public prosecutions Trevor Ward and local lawyer Eileen Nervick were all appointed as QCs.

McKie has been a partner at Maples since 2007. He was originally admitted as a solicitor-advocate in England and Wales in 1994 before moving to Cayman in 1999.

Only a handful of private practice lawyers have been appointed as QCs in Cayman, including Maples’ former litigation head Andrew Jones and Walkers partner Angus Foster, who are both now judges in the Financial Services Division of the Cayman Islands courts.

Maples’ global managing partner Henry Smith said the firm was “very proud” of McKie.

The new silks will be formally appointed later this year at a ceremony in the Grand Court.
