Cayman Looking Back ExhibitionCayman Islands Looking Back Exhibition Opens

Grand Cayman, 2 May 2016 – An exhibition of artwork and photography opened last weekend (Saturday 30 April) is piquing the interest of art and history lovers, as the images displayed show a range of sea and landscapes from decades gone by.

Darvin Ebanks, an underwater photographer who owns To the Edges of the World photo gallery has for more than four decades been capturing the essence of Cayman through his viewfinder.

Several of the images in the Cayman Looking Back exhibition are from the personal collection of Mrs. Arydth Smith, which Mr. Ebanks says compliments his more than 40 years of work. “You can’t see this in Cayman any more; our culture is always changing as time goes by. Many of the places have been knocked down or weather has changed its appearance,” he said.

He encourages people to visit the show to see just a little bit of what he has stored away as his own personal treasure. “I have so much history laying around in storage; I thought it was a good time to show that history as it means so much to me and so many of my peers,” commented Mr. Ebanks.

Sculptural works by Horacio Esteban, along with a series of photographic images, exposes the Caymanite and limestone rock he uses as his canvas. “I think the addition of having natural stone work by Mr. Esteban is an added bonus. You get to see the old Grand Cayman in the photographic way but you also get to see and touch the old stones which are truly Cayman’s past,” said Mr. Ebanks jovially.

The “Cayman Looking Back” photographic and sculptural exhibition is on at the Cayman Catboat Club on N. Church Street, closing on Friday 20 May. You can pop by the exhibition between 12noon and 3:00pm daily or call 929-7181 to make a personal appointment or schedule a group tour.
