Jamaica risks discrediting Monarchy, warns Bishop of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands

The Anglican Bishop of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands says Jamaica could run the risk of discrediting the British Monarchy in its zeal to become a republic.

Bishop Gregory

Addressing congregants during a service to mark the celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee at the St Andrew Parish Church this morning, the Right Reverend Howard Gregory said although Jamaica is at a crossroads in its efforts to develop a national identity, people must be careful not to bring the monarchical governance into disrepute.

He says in spite of the circumstances which led to Her Majesty’s ascension to the throne, she has been sensitive to the needs of her people over the past century.

However, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has reiterated that despite the move to replace the queen as the head of state, Jamaica will always hold the British Monarchy in high esteem.

Simpson Miller said within the monarchical system there are many areas for emulation as Jamaica pursues a path for sustainable development.
