Final look: Cayman Islands CARIFTA Swimming Championships 2016

CARIFTA-Landon-Von-KanelAn emotional CARIFTA story that does not have a Cayman Islands swimmer at its centre, and one which the Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association (CIASA) love to tell, is the one which saw the Landon Von Kanel Award being won by 12 year old Mitch Bourgeois of Guadeloupe.

Landon Von Kanel won Cayman’s first CARIFTA Swim Medals at CARIFTA in 1996. Landon was 12 years old and won Gold in both the 200M and 400M Freestyle events in the youngest age group.

In 2001 a tragic car accident claimed Landon’s life — and in 2002 the Landon Von Kanel Award was created for young swimmers who replicated his 1996 double gold achievement. Dave Kelshiemer, Landon’s coach, had a special bond with Landon and he initiated the idea of the award as recognition for distance swimmers in a sprint-focused Caribbean.

In the years that this award is won, it is presented by CIASA in Landon’s memory. This year CARIFTA Swim Team Co-Captains Ella Plunkett and Eddie Weber presented the award to 12 year old Mitch Bourgeois of Guadeloupe – honouring a young man; and his family who are still passionate supporters of swimming in the Cayman Islands.

Pastor Randy (as most in Cayman know Landon’s father) serves on the YMCA Board and remains committed to providing Cayman’s youth with access to the growth, discipline and focus that come from taking part in organized sports.

This year, Cayman won 15 medals – 8 gold: all individual, 6 in the pool and 2 in open water; 3 silver: all in the pool, 2 individual and 1 relay and 4 bronze: 3 in the pool and 1 open water, all individual.

Additionally a number of new Long Course CIASA and National Records were set at CARIFTA 2016:

GIRLS
– Alison Jackson: lowered her own Girls 13-14 50 Free LC CIASA and National Records; and broke the Girls Senior 50 Free LC NATIONAL record (previously held by L. Hew) with a time of 27.48.
– Isabella Watler: broke Girls 11-12 100 Butterfly LC NATIONAL Record with a time of 1:12.37 (previously held by J. Foster 1:12.61 since 2002).

BOYS
– Corey Frederick-Westerborg: broke Boys 11-12 200IM LC National Record with a time of 2:37.31 (previously held by S. Fraser 2:40.69 since 2000).
– Jordon Crooks: broke Boys 13-14 50 Free LC CIASA and National Records with a time of 26.51 (previously held by M. Somerville 26:56 since 2015).
– Zachary Moore: broke two Boys 13-14 LC National Records, 50 LC Back with a time of 31.33 (previously held by M. Somerville 31.35 since 2015) and 100 LC Back with a time of 1:05.15 (previously held by S. Fraser 1:06.18 since 2002).

Note that CIASA records may be set by a swimmer of any nationality who is a registered member of CIASA while National records may only be held by Caymanians.

The Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association (CIASA) is a volunteer, not for profit association dedicated to furthering the interests of all aquatic sports in the Cayman Islands. CIASA is the recognised Governing Body of aquatic sports in the Cayman Islands and is a member of FINA, UANA, CCCAN and the CIOC. For more information on CIASA please visit www.ciasa.ky.
