Gianni Infantino ‘dismayed’ his ‘integrity is being doubted.’

FIFA’s new president Gianni Infantino signed off on a contract with two businessmen who have since been accused of bribery, according to a Panama Papers leak.

Infantino was the director of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) in 2006 when he okayed a contract selling broadcast rights for UEFA Champions League matches to Hugo and Mariano Jinkis. They immediately on-sold the rights for almost three times the price paid, the BBC reported on Wednesday.

The news contrasts with UEFA’s earlier statement that it did not conduct any business with 14 people who were investigated by the FBI on suspicion of corruption. UEFA told the BBC the broadcasting rights were sold in an “open, competitive, tender process” and has denied any wrongdoing.

Hugo and Mariano Jinkis are fighting extradition from Argentina to the United States. In May 2015, U.S. prosecutors alleged that as the owners of Cross Trading, an offshore company registered on the tiny Pacific island of Niue, they paid millions of dollars in bribes. The money was allegedly handed to South American football officials over several years in order to gain lucrative television rights for regional football tournaments.

Infantino is named on a contract with Cross Trading that concerns Ecuadorian rights for UEFA Champions League football between 2006-7 and 2008-9.

Infantino, who was elected president of football’s governing body in February, said he is “dismayed” that his “integrity is being doubted.” He said he “never personally dealt with Cross Trading nor their owners” and has never been contacted by law enforcement about these contracts.
