Drunken Captain Gets Vessel Stuck in Germany

schiff-unfall-lohr-am-main-106-_v-img__16__9__xl_-d31c35f8186ebeb80b0cd843a7c267a0e0c81647By Mike Schuler From gCaptain

An inland freighter found itself pinned in a peculiar way on Germany’s Main river after the drunken ship captain allegedly ran the vessel into a bridge and then the river bank.

Local media reports that the 105-meter vessel Elsava became pinned crossways between a bridge and the edge of the river in Lohr am Main, Germany early on Thursday.

Photos and video of the incident show the vessel’s bow protruding several meters up onto the riverbank.

Upon boarding the vessel police found that the Captain was smoking cigarettes and drinking. He later blew a .15 BAC in a breath test and was taken to the police department for booking.

The ship remained pinned [for a few days but was pulled free later].

Dominican Republic to export natural gas to the Caribbean

From Dominican Today

Houston.- Dominican Republic will become a natural gas distribution and re-export center to the Caribbean region this year, Caribbean Trade Consortium and Commonwealth Roundtable president Fernando Gonzalez Nicolas affirmed Saturday.

As guest speaker in the “Conference on Gas Transport and Marketing in the Americas” held in Houston and hosted by the British organization Informa, Gonzalez said the center will have a positive impact on the Dominican economy with “many collateral benefits to our country.”

“As natural gas and propane gas increase their presence in power generation throughout the Caribbean region, Dominicans will be the first after Trinidad in supplying natural gas to the region, through the re-export of natural gas,” the business leader said.

He said given tourism’s vital importance to the Caribbean, the use of clean fuels such as propane and natural gas will spread, “because they don’t harm the environment.”

In a statement, Gonzalez also noted that since the power companies consume the most fuel, the region’s trend is toward fewer fossil fuels and more natural gas and propane.

He acknowledged however that the Caribbean countries face key technical and financial challenges to convert to natural gas.

Niebert Blair, of Caricom, and Andrew Clifton, Executive Director of the International Society of Tanker Ships and Terminal Operators including the US, Europe and Asia also participated in the English-Caribbean conference.

29 percent women obese in Latin America, Caribbean

By IANS From New Kerala

Mexico City, March 2 : Twenty-nine percent women and 18 percent men in Latin America and the Caribbean suffer from obesity, Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Jose Graziano da Silva has said.

Speaking at the FAO’s 34th Regional Conference in Mexico City, Graziano da Silva warned that the region was seeing a rapid rise in obesity, with around 22 percent of adults now suffering from the disease, Xinhua news agency reported.

He said obesity now affects seven percent of the children under the age of five in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Besides this, Silva said chronic malnutrition among children affects over 20 percent children in certain countries, including Mexico.

But he praised the region for having reduced child malnutrition by 12.9 percent in the last 25 years.

In the end, he said the FAO and its members in the region should work together to continue to improve nutrition and sustainable agriculture.
