iNews briefs 2AOver 20 alleged corrupt election practices investigated

Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) investigated twenty reports of alleged corrupt election practices before Wednesday’s (22) voting day plus another four on the Wednesday.

RCIPS Commissioner David Baines is reported as saying all the complaints were investigated. However, he said, people do not want to put their name to issues nor give statements.

He also said they had received reports that persons were given slips of paper instructing them how to vote.

iNews Cayman has not heard of anyone being arrested for any offences relating to any of the above allegations.

Fire in Savannah may have been started by flare gun

On Sunday (26) the Cayman Islands Fire Service attended to a fire at a four bedroom house off Homestead Crescent in Savannah, near Wendy’s at approx. 11:15pm.

Two fires were burning in one of the bedrooms and extinguished by the fire officers. It is reported that although there was only a small amount of damage to the property smoke damage was considerable.

A spokesperson for the Fire service said, “It is alleged that someone fired a flare gun through the window from the outside, setting the bed linen on fire.”

No one was reported injured. The matter is under investigation.

Rivers wants a Cabinet seat for her team-mate McTaggart

Coalition for Cayman (C4C) candidate winner, Tara Rivers, has refused the Progressives’ leader and Cayman’s new premier, Alden McLaughlin’s offer of a Cabinet seat and is holding out for two more seats for her Coalition colleagues, with emphasis on one for Roy McTaggart.

McLaughlin is unlikely to agree with this, therefore it would appear that Rivers and the C4C have blown their chances of having a representative as a Cabinet member.

McTaggart made emphatic comments in public that he would not support McLaughlin as premier before the election that he has since withdrawn.
