Hookie Weekend highlights J’ouvert & Mas with interesting 2023 themes
Washington, DC (Sonique Solutions) – HookieLife Entertainment proudly presents the highly anticipated J’ouvert and Mas events that have become a fixture during its annual weekend of festivity, Hookie Weekend. The beloved staples ‘Lion’s Pride J’ouvert’ and ‘Riddim & Road’ are back for 2023 with creative themes much to the delight of patrons.
Taking place at the Rosecroft Raceway on Saturday June 17th and Sunday June 18th respectively, Lion’s Pride J’ouvert and Riddim & Road are both celebrations of Caribbean culture, music, and vibrant revelry. These exhilarating events promise to arouse the DMV with an explosion of colour, energy, and energizing rhythms that will captivate the diverse collection of attendees.
For 2023, Lion’s Pride J’ouvert bears the theme ‘Pirates of The West Indies’. Along with mud, paint, powder, music trucks and drinks trucks, the promoters have always amplified the vibe by encouraging patrons to dress up in character to match the annual theme. One can expect an onslaught of swashbuckling get-ups and regalia for this year’s edition of the large scale J’ouvert affair.
The fan favourite, Riddim & Road which is Hookie Weekend’s answer to the ‘pretty mas’ experience is this year themed ‘House of Cards’. As done in previous years, the event allows the participants to design their own costumes, utilize their ‘Monday Wear’ or to masquerade with old costumes from previous international carnivals.
HookieLife team member Jason Bough touched on the motivation behind the 2023 themes for these events stating, “As we always try to activate creativity in our guests, this year we were brainstorming a theme for Lion’s Pride that could be fun, uniquely Caribbean and one that could influence several costume variations, in particular different island-styled approaches to the costumes, thus Pirates of The West Indies was conceived”.
He continued, “The House of Cards theme is a commentary on the fragility and fleeting nature of life. For this year’s Riddim & Road, we have partnered with a professional designer to capture the essence of our motif and to create unique ‘House of Cards’ costumes for purchase.”
These events are geared to transport attendees to the lively streets of the Caribbean and to provide an unforgettable experience for all.

DC to get a dose of J’ouvert & Mas during Hookie Weekend 2022

The weekend-long extravaganza produced by Hookie Life Entertainment will feature a full Caribbean Carnival-style experience and adding to this buffet of events are every festival lover’s favourite elements i.e. J’ouvert and Mas.
This upcoming ‘Juneteenth weekend’, a wide range of Hookie Weekend attendees will enjoy and exercise the freedom associated with Carnival celebrations and have the opportunity to express themselves through the weekend’s famous ‘dutty’ and ‘pretty’ mas events.
On Saturday June 18th, the famous Hookie Weekend early morning tradition, ‘Lion’s Pride J’ouvert’ takes place from 7AM at the Rosecroft Raceway.
Regarded as the best J’ouvert event in the DMV, Lion’s Pride offers an authentic West Indian experience complete with branded t-shirts & swag packages for registrants who excitedly revel in paint and powder to powerful music blasting from a big truck.
One day removed from Lion’s Pride J’ouvert, the excitement continues at the Rosecroft Raceway with the beloved ‘Riddim & Road’ on June 19th from 2PM.
This Hookie Weekend innovative mas concept has been remixing the traditional Mas model by allowing its masqueraders to be the costume designer.
Attendees can participate in this alternative road experience by wearing old costumes from previous international carnivals, ‘Monday Wear’ options or even their own inspired costume creations.
In addition to recycling or repurposing old costumes, for 2022 Riddim & Road registrants can also purchase a brand new costume from the exclusive ‘Afrobeat’ sections by Scion Carnival.

Hookie Life Entertainment delivered epic experiences over Juneteenth Weekend
Washington, DC (Sonique Solutions) – This past Juneteenth Weekend in the United States, the Hookie Life Entertainment team once again delivered another successful execution of its beloved, annual summertime staple ‘Hookie Weekend’. Caribbean culture was on full display during this line-up of exciting events which attracted thousands of festival lovers to the Washington DC metropolitan region for full a weekend of unmatched revelry.
With 6 major events over the span of 5 days, the 2022 edition created memorable moments for its patrons complete with the very best of authentic West Indian entertainment.
Following the epic Thursday night kick-off event ‘Release Therapy’ at the Ivy City Smokehouse which featured a dynamic performance by US Virgin Islands Soca star Adam O, attendees from various US & Canadian cities and Caribbean islands converged at the venue, Gateway DC for the Hookie Weekend Friday afternoon fixture known as ‘Hookie DC’.
For this event which is regarded as the ultimate premium Caribbean pool party, the organizing team transformed Gateway DC into ‘vibes central’ with a relaxing pool, VIP cabanas, a variety of games to go along with the ‘Arcade’ theme and several cross-cultural food stalls and bars which were strategically located around the venue.
Adding to Hookie DC’s allure were energetic sets by top international DJs and performances from T&T’s Kes The Band and Voice, Grenada’s Mr. Killa and Jamaica’s Kranium.
Lion’s Pride J’ouvert gave attendees the chance to embrace uninhibited freedom with paint and powder. The signature Saturday morning Hookie weekend J’ouvert event was well patronized and left fans wanting more. This event was followed later that evening by Shine DC (a collaborative effort between Hookie Life Entertainment and Back to Basics Entertainment).
Sunday afternoon’s Riddim & Road was Hookie Weekend’s penultimate event which saw several masqueraders, multiple music trucks, drinks trucks and even live drummers hit the road at the Rosecroft Raceway for a creative Carnival-costumed celebration. During this event, patrons got extra mileage from their previous regional and international Carnival costumes as well as their Monday wear and original costume creations.
Hookie Weekend 2022 ended on a truly high note with the latest addition to the line-up i.e. the cool down affair ‘Oasis’ .
